hello. i would really appreciate your thoughts or advice.
i am pretty confident there’s scaly mite going on, but the weird yellowish scale only appeared the day after slathering the legs with vaseline.
is it a scale? is it something else?
saying i am new is an understatement so i don’t know what to expect.

also, i ordered battles scaly mite formula spray (i’m in ireland). i used the vaseline until it arrived, but now that it’s here, it says nothing about what is in it. it didn’t say online, but i thought it would say on the bottle. anyone have experience with this stuff? i’m thinking i should just stick with vaseline?

Other than that area, her toes look fine. You must be catching it very early!

I looked that stuff up and though we can't get it or if we could, I wouldn't use it personally, but saw it's getting great reviews.

Vaseline 3 x week, then repeat in 7-10 days will take care of it.

thank you for the reassurance! i was worried maybe she had an infection or something. her leg has been questionable for awhile. sometimes it would look normal and other times sort of fat, scaly and white. i don’t have a clue, so i thought at first it was just how she was standing on it. like if she put her weight on that side. but the other chicken started showing signs too, so i wanted to do something before it got worse.

last night, i did both again with the vaseline. i’m skeptical about the spray.

both of these pictures are from yesterday morning maybe you can see what i mean

she is an enigma

We have the same breed. She is like mine. That is normal color and scales of the legs of a Black Sex Link. BUT it would not hurt to give her vaseline. If it does not come off and you have tried everything and she is acting normal, eating, free-ranging, drinking, socializing and have no other signs and symptoms. Then at least you did everything and if does not come off then you know it is normal.
You did mention that you had another girl that has the same leg color band and scales, right? Is it the same breed also? A Black Sex Link? If yes, then it is a normal color and scale pattern. If no, find out what the breed is and research if they should have the same color and scale pattern.

Also, my Black Sex Link named Itum has really, really big talons and feet compared to her peers. She is like a real dinosaur. It is sooooo awesome. She is my favorite of all our birds. At first I thought there was something wrong with her feet (like you mentioned - fat feet) but I think it's just the way they are built. I love, love, love, love these dinosaurs.
PS. Not sure if other Black Sex Links have big feet and talons like our Itum since this is the first time we have had this breed. She is already 3 years old. We live in the US.

thank you! i have no idea what breed she is. she's a bantam though. the other one is different. also bantam. and REALLY small.
looks sorta dutch-ish but i don't know either. probably some kind of mix. the dutch-ish one has lighter legs. not the same.
sort of pink, even.

i haven't used the spray at all but have been using the vaseline.
they seem to be getting a little better each time.

she's a lot of things, but normal isn't one of them 😂
she also has one singular leg feather on her fat foot. 😂

Wow! She is different. Like you said, she is an enigma. I have no experience with Dutch-ish bantams. I did a quick search on Mozilla Firefox (we don't use Google as there are FBI warnings on Chrome). Read the EXCEPTIONS: Here it is:
Typically, Dutch Bantams do not have pinkish legs.
  • Standard Leg Color: For most varieties of Dutch Bantams, the accepted leg color is slate blue, sometimes described as greyish-blue or darker/lighter slate blue depending on the specific color variety.
  • Exceptions: The exceptions to this rule are the Cuckoo and Crele varieties, which may have light or rose-white legs, potentially with a few dark spots.
If your Dutch Bantam has pinkish legs and it's not a Cuckoo or Crele, this may not be consistent with the breed standard, especially for exhibition purposes.

Hope this helps.

ah, thanks! i will not be showing them.
she does have light legs with a few dark spots. she is probably a cuckoo because that would explain a lot! 😂
here she is showing off her pink leg.

thanks for going through the trouble of finding that info, too!
