Scaly Mites or Normal? Weigh In Please

Here are the feet of one of my five, 2 1/2 year old hens. Background: Just lost one last week to unknown causes. This hen, Blondie is in the sick hospital for what appeared to be an impacted crop or gizzard, which has been ruled out. Awaiting fecal test and giving her observation. This week every hen is getting a close up assessment and foot washing.

So, is this scaly mites on Floppy?

If so, what treatments do you recommend if you have dealt with this problem in past?

I would say yes to Scaly Leg Mite (SLM) but it's an early case.
I treat with a mix of Iodine 25% and Vaseline or petrolium jelly 75%.
The aim is to smother the mites so one has to be carefull to get full coverage.
If you've got this hen contained then do it on two successive evenings before roosting time and again each week for a couple of weeks.
I use a soft brush to apply the mixture.
Note. The scales will not go back to normal until she sheds them even if all the mites are dead.

Thank you. I have 4 other hens who will need treatment as well. Ugh....What about the coop? Their coop is attached with their enclosed run. Suggestions there?

SLM live on the chicken rather than in the coop. Sure clean out the coop and spray with permethrin but it's the chickens that you should concentrate on.
