Well my girls don't free range if I'm not out with them, and today I was in the yard with them and way off in th distance I heard a crow make some noise, the chickens freaked out and booked it full speed to the coop.

Why did they do this and is this a good thing

95% of the time my chooks ignore the crows. In fact, yesterday I saw them foraging in the same pasture with the crows.
However, if the crows are making a certain noise - I haven't figured out the difference in crow noises, but apparently my chickens have - the chickens run for cover.
I've seen this happen a few times and each time it does the crows are chasing a bird of prey, usually one of the golden eagles we have around here.
So, I'd say your chickens know what they are doing and that's a good thing!
