(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I've been raising my own birds and rabbits meat for about 6 months, but as a child our family always kept a few egg-laying hens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Not very many at the moment, two Silkie hens. However I have 27 quail hens and 7 quail cocks.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Silkie Chickens and Coturnix Quail

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Reddit

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Gardening, painting, making leather and fur goods, playing classical (Spanish) guitar

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I'm single, I have a 9 month old Border Terrier and a 3 year old Abyssinian cat, I'm a landscape architect by trade and I'm working toward 100% food and energy self-suffiency.

Welcome to BYC!

I wanted to get meat rabbits, too. But my wife and daughter can't seem to wrap their minds around eating something that they see as cute and fuzzy. I had a hard enough time convincing my daughter that quail were food (and she's still completely on board).

Thank you, I love my meat rabbits. They are very cute which is difficult, and I have to keep a strong boundary between my breeding rabbits (who are my pets, with names and will live out their natural lifespan) and their offspring, who are my food. However, I've noticed that in North America there is a much larger taboo about eating rabbits and hares. In Scotland I didn't know anyone personally who raised rabbits or hares, but they're very popular to hunt as you can hunt them with an air gun (which is much easier to get) and nearly everyone eats rabbit pie and things like that.

Quail are tops, absolutely delicious, easy to keep and no waking up to the sound of a cock crowing aye.

I'm planning to get her non-meat rabbits this spring. Maybe Polish or a mini-rex or something I won't be tempted to eat.

It sounds like I'm only about 60 or 70 miles due east of you (in the US but right on the border and not far from the straight). Of course, most of that 60 or 70 miles is water.
