We had our annual "Scouting for Food" event today, and collected a whole bunch of non-perishable food items for those in need.

Part of the process of collecting, sorting, and boxing up everything is to check expiration dates. When I showed up, everything expired was getting tossed in the trash!

We fixed that...they went into the "chicken box"!

When I got home, the cans and boxes were opened, and the chickens got roughly two 5-gallon buckets of treats, and all the packaging that could be got recycled.

I thought it was a great way to keep a lot of stuff out of the landfill, feed some chickens, and hopefully teach the kids a thing or two about sustainability and hopefully help them see that garbage isn't always garbage.

All our expired or getting old leftovers go to the chickens. Either they eat them or they compost down in the run or pasture. Your chickens were probably happy for the feast.

That's awesome! Expired doesn't always mean expired.... and that's gonna make some very happy chickies.
