I've been raising only Mallard-derived breeds of ducks for two years now. I just got a Muscovy duck, about 4 months old, was told it was a female but I'm starting to suspect it's really a male. I don't know much about Muscovies, but I've noticed that when ever I approach the pen I keep it in she/he starts wiggling its butt. I know that ducks wiggle their tushies, but my Khaki and others do it randomly or after they shake water off or something. This duck specifically starts the waggle when I get close. Any ideas? I'd love to find out that is is like a happiness indicator like with dogs but I'm not counting on it lol.

my duckies do that when i come in my room too. i take it as a "i'm happy you are here mommy" type of thing lol. my drake is always walking around shakin his butt and my female shakes her butt when i sing "shake your booty" to her lol.

Not sure.. But both my male and female scoves wag! If hes a boy he will get BIG quick and he'll have alot of red (?not sure of the proper word) Carnalling??? Not right I know. But like a rooster's comb. The scovies have ALOT of red on the faces.

Mine do it when they are excited and both sexes do it. Males will have bigger feet, longer bodies, thicker legs than female their own age. If you only have one it will be harder because you'll have nothing to compare it to.

Hey there! knew we would find each other on this site sooner or later. It's Katy, we've been talking on gmail about your current batch of eggs. Hopefully, my 'scovy won't be alone for much longer, right? Glad to see that this one I've already got doesn't hate me, she/he is still kind of wary since I put it in the quarantine pen and it doesn't get to socialize with the other ducks. Just another week to go ...

Scovies wiggle their butts for everything! Whether its a "hello!" or a "back off!" . Mine wag when they see me going to open the gate ot bring out the corn, but they also wag when they want other ducks to leave them alone or back away from their food/ hens/ water/ ducklings.

Well, sadly I think so far for me it's a "back off" waggle. She/he was used to being pet, but not picked up and really handled from the previous owners. When I got it I had to pick it up to put in the carrier, then when we got home I had to pick it up to inspect it for parasites and to trim the flight feathers. The duck did not enjoy that one little bit, and now doesn't seem to like me much lol.
