I do this too but I see it as using the chickens to process the scraps not only into eggs but to turn it into the composted fertilizer that much faster. Again I also do not have 400 birds!! Wow! One can only wish. That is your choice and I am fine with it. Just wondering why you don't give kitchen scraps to your birds? I have a small backyard flock, and part of the reason I got them was to process those kitchen scraps and make eggs. I do directly compost some kitchen scraps that I don't think would be good for the chickens, but mostly I try to give everything to the chickens first. They also have commercial feed available 24/7, but they seem to prefer grass clipping, pulled weeds, kitchen scraps, etc... before their commercial feed.
Ummm....news flash.....breeders make your flock bigger.I'm trying to cut down on the birds. I've been taking a few to our local swaps to sell, mostly the excess males and some females I'm not going to use as breeders.
