Scrap food feeding method?

There is only hubby and me too. I keep trying to downsize as we are old folks but I usually hatch out more than I plan on hatching.

That is your choice and I am fine with it. Just wondering why you don't give kitchen scraps to your birds? I have a small backyard flock, and part of the reason I got them was to process those kitchen scraps and make eggs. I do directly compost some kitchen scraps that I don't think would be good for the chickens, but mostly I try to give everything to the chickens first. They also have commercial feed available 24/7, but they seem to prefer grass clipping, pulled weeds, kitchen scraps, etc... before their commercial feed.
I do this too but I see it as using the chickens to process the scraps not only into eggs but to turn it into the composted fertilizer that much faster. Again I also do not have 400 birds!! Wow! One can only wish.

I'm trying to cut down on the birds. I've been taking a few to our local swaps to sell, mostly the excess males and some females I'm not going to use as breeders.

I know but I'm addicted.
