My chickens get a wide variety of things from table scraps, to whole grain breads (day old bread from stores that will be thrown out), fresh vegetables (left over from food bank), mixed grains, cracked corn (late fall and winter), black oil sunflower seeds, layer ration plus all the bugs and stuff they forage for.
My feeders are 12lb hanging bucket feeders and scratch grains in hoppers. Some times a few days may go buy before I have to top them off, other times I have to top them off daily. The feeders are available 24/7 along with fresh water.
I just bought my months worth of feed, 1000lbs for fowl (I am feeding 27 meat birds and 47 main flock birds) and 1000lbs for my dairy goats. The cost average was .1475 cents per pound. The more feed you buy in bulk the lower the price. If I did not buy in bulk the feed would cost as much as $2 more per bag. That is alot of money to be saved if you have proper feed storage.
