Scratch in summer?

I would just buy a standard layer feed...I think most are usually 16% protein??? And I offer free choice oyster shell too

I don't believe I've ever had a dozen laying hens, at a time.

With just a half dozen (or less) they get lots of things from the kitchen and I've got way more stuff from the garden during the summer months than they should ever have. I really try to limit the treats of any sort to about 15% of their diet, even during winter.

With all these treats - I want them to have a high-protein feed. Flock Raiser is 20% protein and they have free choice oyster shells.

. . . just the way I do it.

I make my own scratch out of oats, wheat, and BOSS. In the winter I'll add cracked corn but not in summer; as a matter of fact I've stopped the corn now.

Like others have said, I don't give them much, just about 1/2 cup between six standards at night to bring 'em in.
