If your chickens are friendly sorts then they enjoy your company & simply want your attention. Mine will vocalise excitedly as soon as they know I'm outside, especially if they see me heading for their run, but stop as soon as they see I'm heading back inside. They also call @ egg laying time. You may need to observe their behaviour & work from that.
