Kathy: Pretty cool looking Buff Barred. What did you mix to get them?
Robin W

Started out with Barred Rock and New Hampshires to make the F1s. Mated the F1s together to get a variety of different chicks, which included those.

I have some very angry broodies here. ALL (YES 100%) of my Wheaten Ameraucanas are broody. One has chicks already. Two were setting and due to hatch the 28th. I took chicks I hatched yesterday and put under one. All the others are now in the broody buster pen.

Yesterday I split up some pens. I made 2 pens each of Barred Rocks and New Hampshires. Today I got more eggs than usual. Maybe they appreciate being less crowded. Now, I am hoping they are fertile!

No, it is not easy. I got 6 Barred Buff from the F2s....... out of 200 eggs hatched!

  • Barred Rock Rooster x New Hampshire Hen = F1s (100% barred)
  • F1 x F1 = F2s which are:

OK, I lied..... I only hatched 196.

Don't you love how the F2's can throw all sorts of colors. And the ones that you usually want, are 1 out of 64.

At least that is how it is in my project.
