havent read before this but need help.

What to do? I had one chick that should have hatched today for sure as all other have hatched. Including one started a day late. Today is day 22 not including set date. So upon hearing a heart beat, I cracked the shell some and now see some blood. What to do? I've put the poor thing back in the bator and turned it back on. Now what? Is there anything else I can do? This is a CR egg and all others have hatched.

All you can do is wait a bit but if its bleeding it may not make it. There's a stage just before hatch (not sure of the exact time but it could be found if you searched enough over in the hatching section) that the chick draws all the blood in from the surrounding inner shell membrane (this is the way the embryo receives oxygen into the blood stream before its breaks the air cell for its first breath of air) and about this time it is absorbing the rest of the yolk for sustenance, so on.... so the timing was a little early yet to help him out. Some just hatch late for various reasons up to 2-3 days behind the others sometimes.

Looking at the chick it looks as though it is mispositioned in the shell. I have read that this is the reason some die in the shell. Though I can't say what can be done about it. I can't say why it didn't develop like the rest.

Cyn, I'm so sorry to hear that Zane has crossed the bridge. I know you gave him the very best life possible and far more than he would have enjoyed, had he been hatched into any other flock. The fact that he lived as long as he did is a heart warming tribute to the excellent care and love that you and Tom both lavished on that beautiful boy. I shall miss hearing about the love story between him and Gypsy. May he rest in peace and may his sweet soul find joy and freedom on the other side.

Kathy, those are some very beautiful birds! I wish I had the room and patience to do what you are doing. And oh how I wish I lived a lot closer to you! I'd be tickled pink to take all of the rejects!!

No problems on the coop roof, by the way. Denny had that squared away the very next morning. Now Chief and his gang have a beautiful new composition roof, instead of just heavy weight tar paper, and not one leak in the whole bloomin' thing!

And it looks pretty dang schnazzy to boot!!

Broodys running out of my ears here I think. One , Faith has hatched her eggs. But the others will not have eggs to sit on. One lavender orp ,Whisper, and one Del. Hen, Flower. Whisper is adamant Flower not so much just clucking. These girls will not be allowed to set. There are no fertile eggs here now. I lost my BL. ORP about a month ago. He had a heart attack and just up and died.

He was so big and shiny. It was unexpected for sure.
Spring is trying to start here in gasp. The daffodils are starting to bloom. I have the outdoor bug. Days here are in the 50-60's nights in the 20's -40's.
I saw some jubilee orps on the Eng. thread and have lusted after them ever since. They will have to wait until the prices are reasonable though. Probably many years. I wonder how they lay?
What do you think of the jubilees?
It won't be long now until I can start to hatch eggs from my friends here. I would love to do the Easter Hatch along but don't know just yet for sure. Oh, I so want too.
Cyn, How so the little bantams lay? Do they lay peewee or small eggs? Gloria Jean

Cynthia, with all the big birds you've always had, why bantams now? If I wanted them to free range, I think I would let them free range an hour or two before sundown, supervised, then get them used to a whistle and some treat so you can get them back in when you need to.
