Drama? Ha..... I see drama everywhere on BYC, as well as other poultry sites I visit. I don't see it as a negative so much. I see it as passion. Many are passionate about what they do with their chickens. It is hard work to breed chickens to the SOP. I also find much inspiration in posts that some may get ticked about. It inspires me to continue to work hard on culling and making choices with what I have. Personally, I get sick of the attacks on the ones that ARE working hard to do this.

Mutts are mutts..... love 'em or leave 'em. No matter. One thing for sure, there isn't alot of effort or difficult selection in the process of producing them, and there plenty of them available.

BYC is notorious for comments like, "Oh, they are so beautiful," even in the midst of a thread talking about SOP, culling, etc. I don't find that so helpful myself. Even annoying, to me. BYC is kinda like American, ya know. America has traditionally been referred to as a "melting pot," welcoming people from many different countries, races, religions, all hoping to find new opportunities, a better way of life, etc... It is this diversity that makes America what it is, and at the same time, creates challenges. See the similarity to BYC?

Now on what I think of him, I love his roundness, how his tail adds to that without distracting from the overall shape. I also like the smallness of his wattles and comb.

At some point I want to get some more Orps, but for now, I am happy with what I have.


I agree that BYC is a dramatic place. It is hard when everything is written and the tone, with which something is said, is lost. It is difficult not to step on someones toes, when they feel so strongly about something. I am a pretty laid back person, to me, that passion is enviable.

I wish I had a bunch of it!

He really is not bad at all. The 4H boy that I thought would take him, took a different one (a smaller one). I think this one may be going to live with Chooks Chick (Renee), along with a black one. If not, he could be yours! I am keeping only one black and one blue boy. I have too many.

I have been told that the red leakage can be bred out, and that if the type is what you want, to not cull because of it. I dunno... I only have my Imports because I enjoy them. To me, the are just beautiful birds, especially when I see them running (waddling) across the green lawn. Ohhhhh, I love seeing that. No SOP with them for me. Just enjoying them. By the way, they are not the best layers, either. They lay very well for quite some time, but they take extra long vacations.

Kathy, I find that even Suede's bunch takes long vacations, and they get longer, the older the hens get. But, of course, he's outlived all his blue girls except for Dusty, who, coincidentally, quit laying again a few weeks ago for no apparent reason other than she's over four years old and decided she didn't wanna do it, dang it.

EVERYONE should have what they want. I don't dispute that or deny anyone their passion. They just should understand that opinion is just that, opinion, not some edict from On High, that one is truly better than another. In the end, it's a chicken, even if it's the best looking, most close to the SOP ever hatched on the planet. And if it's mean as a snake, I don't give a flying fig how perfect it looks-it's outta here! See, red leakage aside, I don't care for the looks of that rooster you just posted. I don't know why exactly, maybe that I can't even see his legs? I don't like the roundness and "super-fluff" of him, same as I don't like other breeds that show that same roundness and "waddle". It's just not my cup of tea and that is my opinion, not gospel fact, just opinion and preference. And you don't have to like mine, either. Hopefully, friendships are not based on liking the same chickens!

ETA: I bet if a coyote was chasing your boy and Suede, he'd get to yours first.

Oh, Robin, forgot to answer your question. All eggs in the bator seem okay. Recandled a few and all are growing fine, though I only did a small sampling of them. Still have 29 in there.

Yep! I agree! We all have different preferences and opinions..... I sure hope so anyway!

Oh they run, Cyn. I just love they way they run!

Probably not as fast as many of the others though, for sure.

For the record, I like your big old Orp boy better than a Shamo.

Now, I can get a whole new set of hate mail, LOL!




BTW, Miranda's crop is better after two days of soupy gruel with yogurt and other soft foodand lots of massage. It does seem to be working again, poop was more solid so food was getting through. Her color goes in and out, dark purple to more normal. Her eyes show that she doesn't feel well, but she wanted to go back to the coop so we let her. If she dies in there, at least she was with her sister. As long as her crop is working and she can get on the roost (she did manage tonight), then it seems better for her to be in there with friends. No one was picking on her-I do think she's either head hen or second in command, not really sure, but she is a senior in chain of command in that main flock.
