Friends are definitely more important than likes and dislikes in the chicken world. I think your bantams are beautiful and my big old hens of the BR and BO's. Also the NH and The Del's. I sort of like them all.

Love ya Gloria Jean

Sigh.....Kathy since those dogs killed all my Orps, my heart just isn't in it. I figure in a few years I might be ready to try again.

Gloria Jean, you are so right, friends are more important. I can find beauty in all birds, sometimes I just have to look REAL hard.

Bahahahahaha! You are so right! I have the hardest time with the Oriental long legged hard feathered breeds. You know, those really tall, intimidating-looking ones? Scary!

Gloria Jean, I'm sort of with you. Overall, I just like chickens, period. They don't have to be a certain breed, just not mean ones. We may not all have the same type chickens, but we have chickens, right? Lots in common there.

Stevenson, it's not nuts at all if you're in it from a commercial production perspective. That's very similar to what places like Meyers & MPC use every day, though considerably more modernized. And they have multiple units running simultaneously. It's the only way they can hope to keep up with demand.

I can't really get into any of the ornamental breeds myself. While I readily admit that many of them are delightful to look at, they're just not my cup of tea. I need my birds to be large and robust, if for no other reason, than because I let them free range. Small chickens are hawk food around these parts.

I don't think I could bear the heartbreak every time one of my little birds got eaten. So, it's LF or nothing at all. But that's just my opinion. Maybe someday, when I'm too dang old and stoved up to take care of my flock of LF, I'll become one of those crazy old ladies that has a ton of "house chickens" instead of cats!

And they'll all be Serama's or some such, so that I can fit all the more in the house!

Taz, I know how you feel, it's hard after something like that happens. Hopefully, you'll get back into it soon, sometimes giving yourself a little push.

Serrin, I love my Polish! And I like big birds too.

As for breeding, I breed for personality, and I'm rarely disappointed!

Cynthia, I think that is best for Miranda. I think they find comfort in their own surroundings. Still sad tho.

Kathy, I LUV the way them big birds run too! It's hysterical.

Kathy, did you switch from JG's to Orps?

Karen, Kathy doesn't switch..she adds.

My bantam coop pen is covered, but I occasionally am starting to let them out to free range when I have time to sit out there with them. They don't get out for long periods and we do have lots of tree cover, though less in winter. I may not keep bantams forever. It was something I wanted to try for awhile. If I quit keeping them in general, that coop, with some roosts and nests lowered/adjusted, will become the retirement coop for older hens.

Miranda was okay this morning, came out with the group, but she isn't drinking water. We've noticed that so I am making very soupy gruel for her to get her moisture. She only picks at the crumble I've put in her bowl, but will eat scrambled eggs and the grits/oatmeal/yogurt gruel I make for her. Since I had to put Isaac back in the flock for awhile and he will chase her down, we put her back up in the hospital crate temporarily. I don't want him harassing her, and, trust me, he will. He really likes the Brahmas.

Well the hatch is done and I got 8 for 12 of Scotts shipped eggs. Started with 35 ended with 25 after candling and ended with 23 chicks. Of the two that didn't hatch one was a shipped quitter and the other shipped just couldn't get out of the shell. All others were clear so not to bad. My ee's seem to be the best at hatching.

Now Taz don't let it get you down. Even winners get knocked down sometimes. They win cuz they don't stay down. Besides Orps are such nice birds, friendly and lay well and pretty and did I say friendly? I wish you well.

Inkheart - how you doing?
