Rancher - sounds like a good hatch to me! These are columbians?
I am well thanks for asking - havent been online much due to my busy schedule and well i havent been getting notices and my home computer hates the new BYC lol
I have been busy breaking broodies er well trying . I have one that is insistent and will sit there with nothign underneath her! I take the eggs everyday but she still wants babies!
To each his own on the LF and bantam issue. The more i have my lil faverolles and rocks the more i like them. They are friendly and easier to care for than my big girls.
Yesterday i had let the bantam rocks out to free range. i am at the kitchen table - i hear an odd tapping at the sliding door tothe back deck . Yes lil miss Pippa ( bantam rock) was tapping at the door loooking for a treat - opened it gave her a bit of bread and she waddled her cute self back to her coop! That is the bantam tude i love!

Karen, Kathy doesn't switch..she adds.

My bantam coop pen is covered, but I occasionally am starting to let them out to free range when I have time to sit out there with them. They don't get out for long periods and we do have lots of tree cover, though less in winter. I may not keep bantams forever. It was something I wanted to try for awhile. If I quit keeping them in general, that coop, with some roosts and nests lowered/adjusted, will become the retirement coop for older hens.

Miranda was okay this morning, came out with the group, but she isn't drinking water. We've noticed that so I am making very soupy gruel for her to get her moisture. She only picks at the crumble I've put in her bowl, but will eat scrambled eggs and the grits/oatmeal/yogurt gruel I make for her. Since I had to put Isaac back in the flock for awhile and he will chase her down, we put her back up in the hospital crate temporarily. I don't want him harassing her, and, trust me, he will. He really likes the Brahmas.

So she must still have JG's, and those heritage BR's?

Cyn knows me all too well. I try to downsize, and then I end up replacing the ones I downsize. One problem could be that when I do downsize, I don't totally get rid of the breed. I toss a few girls in the layers coop and add another rooster to the rooster pen, and then rationalize that I just downsized. How does that happen? I keep asking myself that.

Yes, I do still have some Jersey Giants, but they are on the cutting list.

I will miss them, ALOT!

Current downsize plan includes more than just chickens, I'll tell ya that! It includes adult children sponging off living with us.

Congrats on the hatch, Tim.

I think we are going to try to "retire" Miranda and Caroline to the bantam coop, if they can fit through the pop door. If Sunny can, I don't see why those two can't. No steep ramp to climb, no big rowdy rooster to hurt them, just the little man-beasts that are minor irritants. We'll see how they do in there tomorrow. Then, I won't have to worry about Miranda or Caroline being squashed or chased down by a determined, heavy Isaac.

Okay, NOW I got it! I've had to download downsize, too. Usually with chickens that want to have absolutely nothing to do with me. I've only had 2 regrets. One was an Ameraucana rooster, but he went to a better home with 15 hens needing a roo. The other regret was rehoming 2 Blue JG's.

Roos (Kathy's JG's) They were very very nice. My grandaughter used to go in the pen with 4 of them that came up to her thigh, and hand feed them. The splash roo died, he wasted away (Marek's), and the 4th blue, my favorite, I gave to the neighbor who has 12 hens, and considered his last roo "family", this way I would still see him.

I think after the splash JG died, my heart wasnt in it to fit them in here.

Sometimes I've just hatched eggs, and thought , "do I really want more right now?" I got some Houdans I hatched due to Polish impatience, and they're really cute, but go balistic if I go near them. Whereas, my last few Polish couldn't wait to get up on my hand, played on my bed, and napped next to me when they were tired. (old sheet on bed).

Nuf chattin, gotta work soon.

No, no worry about Isaac, just worry about those little rapist bantams!

Those girls deserve the retirement.

Cyn: That might help the girls out.
