Dang I wish we were closer...I could put her right into the brooder with my five and silver the single chick issue. Sorry you lost little Delaware. So is Gypsy Charlotte's daughter then?

Yes, Gypsy is Charlotte's daughter. I originally had Charlotte, Silver and Scout. I sold Silver and Scout to my young friend in South Carolina after I had sold a few dozen hatching eggs and hatched some of my own here. I kept only Gypsy for myself. She is the daughter of Charlotte and Scout. Scout's sire was a Cree Farms show bird, owned by Lynn herself, but his mother was out of Rivergait Farms (not sure where they got their BBS stock). Nora and Snow are 100% Cree Farms Ameraucanas.

I emailed Kevin to see if he wanted to put this chick in with his that were hatching this past weekend but haven't heard from him yet. He had another of Caroline's eggs still in the running in his bator on Friday when he picked up another set of eggs from me.

Nugget has 8 eggs under her, one each of:

Ellie
Caroline
Snow
Panda
Becca
Dusty
and two of Meg's.

I hope the Orps are fertile, but it seems when I eat them for breakfast, they are and when I incubate them, they aren't.

I never planned to incubate Panda's green golfball eggs, but she is Zane's daughter, Charlotte's daughter and Hawkeye's granddaughter, and they're all gone now, so it's in there. Of course, Tom adores Becca and she's 5 1/2 and can't be here too much longer so that will be a DelaRock.

ETA: Just came to me that Panda is also Lexie's granddaughter, through Zane being the son of Hawkeye and Lexie.

Yay Nuggers! She is reliable albeit ever enduring mama....the kids will be ready for college before she cuts the apron strings. hahahahaha

My new babies are outside in the day pen soaking up the sun and experienceing grass, ducks, and BIG HUGE MONSTER CHICKENS for the first time....they all got this expression when Lancelot and Hector strolled over to peer in at them....

But they are well guarded...Hector has taken it upon himself to circle their pen and chase away anyone coming to close and when I came inside, he was lying down outside the pen door. He is such a good boy.

Nugget has passed her 4th hatchday and I'm thinking this may be the 6th brood she's incubated, if memory serves. She's extremely reliable and the best mama. Remember, I had to take Roosevelt away from her when he was 15 weeks old, LOL! I hope at least one of Meg's eggs ends up in a chick this time.

Molly, my Silver Phoenix, is turning out to be a good broody as well. Her little man is 8 weeks old today and she is still mothering him, too, though she definitely isn't as on-the-spot when he chirps for her.

My Icelandic girls are very good setters and mothers. I love watching them mother their chicks. They are not at all "overly" careful. Kinda makes me think about that, too. Survival of the fittest kinda thoughts. They are done raising their chicks at about 4 weeks. Brown Broody Mama hatched on 4-27, and was done raising them 5-25. She started with 9 chicks, and raised 8 of them. One just disappeared, I guess. Never did find it. Something else I observed with them (Icelandic mamas) is that they continue to watch over the chicks, from a distance, for an additional few days.

Here are the 8 chicks just a few minutes ago; afternoon siesta. Can you find all 8 of them?

One I'd say is male for sure, Kathy. Can't really tell on the other.

The chick is still about the same. It refuses to eat. Tom liquified some egg yolk in water and was trying to feed it with an eyedropper to encourage it to show interest in food, but if it won't even peck at the crumble or drink water, there is no hope for it. I suppose the good thing about that is we won't have to worry about a single chick, but I hate that there was probably not a blasted thing wrong with that baby until Dottie crushed it like she did. I'd be surprised if it's alive in the morning.

My Blue Marans broody did the same thing, just a few days ago. She killed 4 (or was it 5) chicks as they hatched. I don't know why she let this ONE live. Her name is Killer. - ɹǝןןıʞ Maybe I should call her Helen; Helen Killer.... ɹǝןןıʞ uǝןǝɥ
