Yes, my dogs did it. One of em I've raised from a pup, actually have only had her since March...

This happened in the last hour, as I'd been inside calling around to some folks about getting goats tomorrow. I went to make sure everyone was put up, close up the runs/coops when I heard her.

She's got a full crop, thankfully. I've got her with dry crumbles and water with polyvisol right now, but she's sleeping. In the morning, I'm gonna mash up her crumbles with yogurt and scrambled eggs. Hopefully she's still alive when DH comes in from with at 3am.

Thank yall, for the kind words.

I candled mine tonight... and most of em look developed. First time I've ever candled though... so I'm just gonna let em all go for another 2 weeks (which should be about hatch time) and just keep an eye on em till then...

dang Nicole I am so sorry. Doggie must go for sure. Poor gal you are doing everything you can. Take some pics of it in the morning if she is still hanging in there and let us take a look ... we might have more suggestions.

Darn it Nicole.....its always sad to lose one but even worse when its something like that.

Speckled, here's hoping your girl keeps her 4 eggs! I have each of my broodies on a BUNCH. I don't have 100% fertility anymore because of all the cochins and young roosters......so they get as many as they can cover and then I hope at least 1 hatches.

Cetawin, You should make your brooders 6 feet long instead. So they can fit along the front and back wall of your building. Just make the front and back walls mesh on the one in front of the window and the light will just shine through it

That would give you four pens that are 2x6. Make a few "floor cage" to go in the rest of the room and there is plenty of room for everyone and some room for storage and things.

Beth, thanks

thats enough

Cetawin-you crack me up

Oh Nicole!

I'm so sorry. It's so hard to loose one to a dog, and ten times worse when it's your own dog doing the dirty deed. I so hope that you can maybe train this out of them instead of having to rehome them.

How many dogs do you have? And what breeds are they? For some dogs, no amount of training by the average person is going to work....it's in their blood to hunt and kill.

But some of them can be trained, and I hope your dogs fall into that category.

I don't know what I would do if our old boy [10 year old Jasper the mutt] ever tried to take a chunk out of one of our birds. Besides freaking out, I think I'd be in complete and utter shock! Crazy dog thinks those chickens are HIS babies! He just lets me feed and take care of them.

Kathy, that brooder set up is looking good girl!

See? I knew you could do it!

Oh! And guess who let me hug and snuggle and cuddle them in their coop tonight??? Yup! Maggie, Lisette and....and....*snapping fingers, trying to remember the name Beth suggested* Cosette? **scrollscrollscrollscroll* Yup! That was it! "Cosette" Thanks Beth, I think that works! Anyhow, The Three Girls let me climb half way up into the coop tonight so I could give them some affection and spend some quiet time with them.

There's just enough room for the four of us in there if I should elect to crawl in there with them, with plenty of room left over for all of us to move around a bit. I was really surprised at how calm Maggie remained through the entire time. Lisette and Cosette on the other hand, acted unexpectedly shy! All they wanted to do was lift mother up off of her feet in their efforts to crawl completely under her.

I don't think any of them realize just how big they're getting!

*Sigh* In time they'll come to trust me, but that all takes time. Something I never seem to have enough of these days.

I'll try to get some more pictures next week. This weekend is all taken up with the opening of Elk season!!

I wish I could retrain them.

Leia, my 13 1/2yo black lab, already has a history of eating little fuzzy things, though it hasn't been a problem for the last few years. She's been following Frog around constantly (I knew the look was a sign, and had scolded her accordingly several times), and I guess this evening she finally snapped. I guess I shoulda known better.

Splat is a 9mo Lab/Aussie She's pushed the limits plenty, but she's always left them alone, other then sticking her nose on thier back and sniffing/lightly shoving them (for which I also scolded her)

So I can't tell if it was one or the other, or both, but I know they've both had Frog "cornered" together before...so they both must go.

My heart just hurts, yall. I love my dogs....

Nicole I so understand...I love mine too believe me...This is my half great pyr/half lab beast...comforting mama when she was sick....yeah like that made me feel better to be unable to breathe. LOL.

The way I see it....you have several choices....for the lab:

Muzzle her whenever she is outside
Electronic collar (mine wears one and it works - he is runner)
Confine her to a crate or kennel whenever you cannot be eyes on and the birds are out
Do not free range the birds and beef up security on their run with hotwire
or
rehome (very difficult with an older dog)

This is the collar I highly recommend I can stop that 80 lb dead in his tracks and it has an awesome range...and is waterproof

The aussie cross ....rehome that dog. It is a rare one that can be trusted with birds. Their prey drive is ubber strong and against small animals.

Now why did I crack you up this time?

Janelle only 2' deep for The Man, Spike? Surely you jest...that gives him no room to strut and dance.
