Oh Nicole!
I'm so sorry. It's so hard to loose one to a dog, and ten times worse when it's your own dog doing the dirty deed. I so hope that you can maybe train this out of them instead of having to rehome them.
How many dogs do you have? And what breeds are they? For some dogs, no amount of training by the average person is going to work....it's in their blood to hunt and kill.
But some of them can be trained, and I hope your dogs fall into that category.
I don't know what I would do if our old boy [10 year old Jasper the mutt] ever tried to take a chunk out of one of our birds. Besides freaking out, I think I'd be in complete and utter shock! Crazy dog thinks those chickens are HIS babies! He just lets me feed and take care of them.
Kathy, that brooder set up is looking good girl!
See? I knew you could do it!
Oh! And guess who let me hug and snuggle and cuddle them in their coop tonight??? Yup! Maggie, Lisette and....and....*snapping fingers, trying to remember the name Beth suggested* Cosette? **scrollscrollscrollscroll* Yup! That was it! "Cosette" Thanks Beth, I think that works! Anyhow, The Three Girls let me climb half way up into the coop tonight so I could give them some affection and spend some quiet time with them.
There's just enough room for the four of us in there if I should elect to crawl in there with them, with plenty of room left over for all of us to move around a bit. I was really surprised at how calm Maggie remained through the entire time. Lisette and Cosette on the other hand, acted unexpectedly shy! All they wanted to do was lift mother up off of her feet in their efforts to crawl completely under her.
I don't think any of them realize just how big they're getting!
*Sigh* In time they'll come to trust me, but that all takes time. Something I never seem to have enough of these days.
I'll try to get some more pictures next week. This weekend is all taken up with the opening of Elk season!!
