Head is better, thanks! Dang weather transitions periods are rough on my sinuses.

Am planning a new quilt, even though I haven't finished piecing the current one (plus I am going to put together a lap quilt size kit for goldenluver before I can start on it, after I get Ellie's quilt done). Check out the Tennessee Waltz pattern I want to do:

Have to stay off the streets and out of trouble, eh?

Alright, I have to admit....I am NOT IMPRESSED with my youngest white leghornx broody. She does fine when locked up with the baby, but otherwise? Oy vey, that girl is just worthless. I let them out with the flock for a bit this morning while i was putzing around......she clucks and fluffs out but utterly fails to keep track of her baby or protect it from most of the other birds. She did find it a little worm which it gobbled up.....but the younger jerk roosters at one point had it surrounded and were eyeballing it and she was just clucking away.....facing in the opposite direction and ignoring it. Stupid hen. I 'rescued' the baby and held it for a few minutes without her even looking for it..........and then stuck it in the dog crate and let it PEEEEEP really loudly for a few minutes and she didn't look for it. Stupid hen.

I locked them back up for now.

Cetawin, your girl does still have that 1 baby. It is yellow with feathered legs and hatched out of an olive egg. So, half cochin. Thinking maybe the aracuana/marans olive egger is the mom since it has no beard. Not sure which cochin is pops.

Also, your buff columbian boy was too busy harassing the masses to pay attention to the baby that was out and about.....however the blue cochin I tried to pawn off onyou in July was the only boy to be NICE to it. I tell ya, you missed out! He came over and eyed it.....and then started clucking and scratching and showing it treats. What a good boy he is.

Alright kids, time for me to take a nap (LOL) and then I'm going to be up and at em.....drew up some plans to finish the 4x4 coop last night. Hoping to do that late afternoon.....don't expect to finish today, but hopefully I can get the back wall and door on, the roost and nestboxes together and start on the track for the sliding pop door. The roof will be last....i hate roofing....

Cyn I hear ya this sinues infection is driving me nuts! Glad your headache is gone.

Beth I know I am very excited. I am waiting on Boni's list of her trunk contents so I can go shopping for her before she gets there. I have already palced the call into the farrier for him to come out and do a met and greet, and I spoke to Tony the transport driver yesterday. He i picking up another horse before her so, she gets the rear 2 stalls all to herself for the trip.

Beth, we need pics of the new baby. My boy will learn some manners when he gets here or he gets to meet all of Lancelot's mass for rooster education.

Her ya go LH.

I'm gonna try to get a few Dels in the Spring. I'm in love with the one in Kathy's avatar!

Brandon they look wonderful. Myrtle is such a beauty

. That brooder looks great...why would we laugh. I think it is a fabulous start and once you get your doors, hardwire cloth and etc in place it will be a perfect brooder. Yes you need some Dellies this spring...plenty of folks here on this thread to get eggs from...Kathy and Beth both will have hatching eggs for sale in the Spring.

They look perfectly happy living in the kitchen with you. I love their first crows d'Artagnan is going off every morning with the big boys and it is adorable.

Ya know, I just remembered that it is Halloween! I need to go buy some treats. Well, not that we get any Trick-or-Treaters here, out in the country ..... BUT, it is a good excuse to buy candy!

Brandon,
Your chicks are really growing. They look great! I love the brooder you are making, too! You will be all set for more chicks. Be sure to post a picture of it when you are done, too. Oh, you like the one in my avarar? Good .... then she is doing her job! She is my Delaware mascot, and it is her job to put you in a trance and convince you to get Delawares!

Nella,
Your broody doesn't care about being a mama, huh? I have had two of those .... a silkie no less! After about a week, she was done with them and went back to laying eggs. The other was a Light Sussex. She was a good sitter, but did not care for the mama role. She started picking up the chicks and literally tossing them around. Darn girls! Your blue cochin boy sounds like a great guy! He wanted to play daddy with the kid. I love the way the roosters are all protective over baby chicks. The hens are not that way, but the roosters (here anyway) just do not mess with them. NAP? NO .... get some carpentry work done to show us!

I'm very happy with these babies as well as the older ones I got from Sarah. As far as the brooder I got a little more done on it today. All I like is attaching one door, putting wire on both doors, and wire across the top. It's made out of 90% reused/recycled material. looks good if you don't look real close. I can't cut a straight line, Nor draw one even with a straight edge. There i've admitted one of my many flaws, lol. I was left handed in early grade school and was forced to my right. I blame that. I feel bad for Sarah, but i'm glad she has such a great friend in you!

Kathy She is doing her job!!

I feel the strong urge to order eggs/chicks, but must find the strength to wait till spring! I will post pics of the brooder when done. Hopefully this week. Trying to get ready just in case any of these 26 eggs I got decide to hatch in 2 weeks.

Well Sarah's 27 birds are here and tucked in....the 4 bantams in their own huge cage and the 22 or 23 orps of various ages happily running around inside the camper checking out their new digs. Man they got it made...a house on wheels with tons of room for them. And housekeeping to visit every day. What a deal.

Tomorrow I will work on them a run area, we were all just too tired to deal with it this evening.

Brandon, we all have flaws so don't sweat it in the least. Put pics of it up when you get it finished. I am glad you are happy with your babies, I will tell Sarah tomorrow when I see her.

Sorry Kathy, I did not work on the 4x4 coop today! LOL.....I have a bad habit of starting projects and taking a few months off before finishing them. Sigh.

I did do some "dog related things". I have an incredibly obnoxious 10 months old chow mix.....she has been slowly demolishing everything in her path. Including but not limited to the wires going into my power and cable box, the lattice fencing around the deck area, the bottom of the outside door frames, deck boards and the deck railing.

I had been kind of propping things up to block her from the things I did not want her chewing. So tonight I started building my fixes.

I have it screwed down to the deck to keep it in place. I plan on painting it the same color as the siding so it will sort of "blend in".

Then I put up 3 foot tall metal fencing on the inside of the lattice fencing, to make a non-chewable barrier.

The nice part is, you can't see it from the outside unless you get up close to the deck. I only got it half done...need to do the bottom area around the planter still plus the gate. But the gate needs to be taken apart, rebuilt and rehung as well. Sigh.

Got a better picture of the finished brooder in the daylight.

24277_1031000938.jpg

I moved it over to butt up against the house under the carport. My BF will be here in 2 weeks so he can help me move it down to the garage. Until then it can stay up here and I can use it to hold any sale birds.....or just admire it. Ha.

Anyone here made any hoop house type pens? I have a 4 foot pen out back I use for babies or roosters. I ended up putting a hoop house type roof on it with PVC and a tarp. It works GLORIOUSLY and was super cheap. And it makes what was a 4 foot pen tall enough to stand up in. Yippee. Mine is a bit backwards because of the slope of the hill and the way the door was setup and the neighboring pen. Normally you'd put the door on the "tall" end and make it 6 feet tall....but this was built around an existing pen, so it works well enough.

Anyone else do anything EXCITING today? Other than Cetawin and Sarah, ha ha ha. Braclin, fyi, my cuts are always crooked too.....the best part? Chickens don't care! Whoo!
