Lol, I pulled one baby out from under the silkie hen while i was removing eggs. She is a small hen and they are large fowl eggs/chicks, so she doesnt have much room under there. This one is fine and dandy and fully dry.....

These chicks are all hatching out of gorgeous dark olive eggs. Best bet on the baby daddy would be a blue cochin or my blue wheaten ameracauna.....I guess that just makes them easter eggers who should lay some sort of green eggs. But they are all gorgeous chicks so far...can't wait to get pix of them all. I've never had two broodies sitting on separate nests due at the same time. Its great....if 1 hen is a bad mom, I will take all the babies and give them to the other mom. Or if one quits or something. Excellent idea I had waiting to set eggs on the same day. When I was using the big RIR/Cochin as a temporary broody for the staggered eggs, I actually took some of these olive eggs away from her and stuffed them under the silkie. Once the other eggs were done hatching and I had taken the chicks away, I took some of the silkie eggs and gave them back to the rir/cochin.

Assuming they are both good mothers, they've done really well so far. This has both of their first times broody with me. The rir/cochin hatched here, so it is her first time ever. Not sure if the silkie ever sat at her last home.

eta; I've had hens sit at the same time and share nests, just never sit on separate nests at the same time, literally hatching on the same day. Definitely going to need a broody compound.

Also, on my midnight trip to the backyard (I took a dog for security, btw LOL) I noticed the other broody barred cochin has booted an olive egg out of the nest. That is a tough feat as she is in a cat litter box bottom so it is tall. Guess she doesn't want that egg! LOL.

I'm not sure. I was hoping that I could make a single coop and run area that all the hens and babies could live peacefully in. However, I wonder if they would fight since they would all be "protective". The next best option would be a long skinny coop....split into smaller coops, each with an attached run. Broodies really just need a nice big nest to sit with the babies for the coop portion. Plus a small covered area outside for the food and water and exercise.

I might have to draw up some plans! I wish I had more flat yard space.......darn hills are hard to work with!

I had 2 broodies hatch in a long rabbit hutch type (8ft long). I separated them with wire. I let them all out in the run together in the day time, and they did ok for about 3 weeks. Then, the mamas started arguing, and had to be separated.

ETA: Can you dig a level area, like 8' x 8' and go from there?

He is a good looking boy Kathy...did you kiss his forehead for me kathy? if not...get on it woman. Do it! HEY tell her to save his umbilical cord when it drops off...I will make him a umbilical amulet bag and put it in there.

They are usually in the shape of animals (lizard for boys and turtle for girls) they are beaded on braintanned buffalo, moose or deer. The cord is placed inside it and it is sewn closed...the amulet is kept near him (on his cradleboard or now crib)while he is an infant. Some kids even wore it as a necklace others it was attached to their clothing. Mostly today it is protected by his mother until he becomes a warrior...it is powerful medicine for him because it is a part of his begining...his life force, his strength and growth. It reminds him of his connection to Mother Earth, his earth Mother and all living things. It is given to him and later buried with him.

This is the one I made for my God Daughter

If she is interested in a keepsake of sorts outside the normal baby book style...I would be honored to make one for Kayson...I still have a piece of the moose hide my mocassins were made from over 25 years ago that I would gift to him for his bag and I have plenty of beads LOL
