Also bear in mind many did not survive. HA! You are being a bad chicken mama and I am having CB call that inquisitive Dellie in your avatar and discuss this act of treason...we will get you sorted out.

Couldn't agree more!

Wish I really wish I could be in the New Year's hatch... but since I have chicken rehab planning over the winter, can't get more until Spring.

My "normal" chickens get no heat. The broodies in the garage have heat lamps but mostly for light. A couple have fluorescent bulbs even, ha ha ha. I do have the brooder of older chicks.....they have their heat lamp. I really need to get them outside, but at this point, I wonder if they may have to stay in all winter. They are perfect hawk bait sized. Maybe I will have to get a growout pen together and let the "big kids" mingle with the younguns.

The evil broody was off her nest this morning walking around her brooder so I checked.....12 eggs! either 10 or 11 olive and the last 1 or 2 were brown. I have not candled any as I lost my candling flashlight and none of the others I have can see through those darker eggs. I bet they'll start hatching on the coldest days....late friday or early saturday. That momma better sit tight! If its going to be in the 20's, then she'll need to bump that up 70 degrees to make her babies comfortable.

Good thing she's so mean....she radiates fiery rage LOL. It helps her keep the eggs warm

We don't mention that place here. Shhhhh.

I was more shocked that in three years I never found the place until an accidential search criteria was done in the we hours of the morn...

Please forgive me oh mighty censor

I know I spoil my chickens royally, but believe me, I'd far rather the boys be out in their coop this morning. Red and CB are having a crowing contest right now and trust me, it's ear shattering in such close confines. But the truth of the matter is, I didn't want to see them suffer through a raging case of frost bite to their combs and wattles. Not for vanity reasons, but for any pain such an event may cause them. And since I was remiss in picking up petroleum jelly, this is my penitence.

Until the temperatures go up, they'll stay in the pump house. I have NO desire to see what MINUS 14 degrees [our current temperature at 6:55 am] can do to such lovely combs and wattles. And at these temperatures, even though my boys are huge, hale and hearty, there is the very real possibility of death caused by exposure to such temps. I couldn't live with myself if that happened. I brought these boys into this world. I owe it to them to protect them. Just the same as I would protect the rest of my flock, my dog, my cat, my DH or my GD. They are a part of my family. They have never been considered candidates for the freezer.

Understand Kathy, I'm NOT fussing at you. Part of me heartily agrees with you. We've made our animals soft. But I'm one of those silly people that gets torn up every time I find one of those little birds that didn't make it through the night. Yes, they're accustomed to lower temperatures, but even they can't survive a killing low. I just don't want my boys to share in that fate, especially as I can prevent it. It's just the way I'm made.

OK, gotta drive Annie to school. Her car is down for the count at the moment, and I wouldn't let her drive in these conditions anyway as she has no experience in driving on snow and ice. Guess what we'll be doing this weekend!?

Take care y'all. Look out in the Midwest! You guys are next in line to get this heart stopping cold. Bundle up and stay warm and safe.
