To get an Olive Egger you have to cross a bird with the blue egg gene (Ameraucana or Easter Egger, etc) with a DARK brown egg layer (such as a Marans). Each generation keeps getting darker and darker (if you keep crossing to a Marans). I have only one, and her egg is nearly black, so I have her penned with Ameraucans now.

Holy Guacamole Kathy! Thats a DAAAAAARK egg!!! Wow!!! Can't hardly see the pencil marks! Dang!

I've got a Blue Copper and Black Copper marans pullets and an EE roo... though it seems the cross is supposed to be the other way around? Hubs said we could try for some olive eggers... he likes the idea of different colored eggs

I thought you had to have a "dark" roo over an EE or Amer. hen. Can you use a blue Amer roo to a Dark marans hen? I have a CM hen and a lav Amer roo.

Both Oliver and Jacob were in the pen. Either one could be the daddy.

Well since we're all on this subject anyhow, seems like now would be a good time to raise this question. Kathy, wasn't Alexander in the same pen with Maggie when she conceived Lisette and Cosette? Or was he already off to Beth by that time? And if you had to take a guess at it, what color eggs do you suppose those two little girls might lay when their time comes? And since Maggie carries the olive gene [I'm assuming here] what might any future daughters of hers throw once they mature. She's in with Chief, but that hasn't stopped the little tart from visiting The Boys.

In any case, all of my boys came from light to medium brown eggs, but nothing near as dark as some of those eggs of yours, Kathy. Any guesses on what might come of any of that?
hu.gif
Anyone? Anyone?

I'm really hoping that she'll go broody for us come spring. And if she does....Kathy, Beth, Cynthia, Scott, Tim, is there any chance I could buy some fertile Del eggs from any of you fine folks at that time? You've all got such beautiful stock, I'd be thrilled to pieces if I could add about a dozen Del chicks to our current flock. Just don't tell Denny what I'm up to!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! It'll be our seekrit!!!

[yes, I know how to spell secret! That was deliberate

There's another thing I've been wondering Kathy: How many times in the past did Maggie go broody? And how many times did you let her sit on and hatch eggs? Are Lisette and Cosette her only offspring?
hu.gif
Did she ever hatch out anyone else's eggs? Inquiring minds would kind of like to know that!

Well, coming up on 10:00...I'm off to find my pillow!

Y'all have a great day tomorrow. Stay warm, stay dry, stay safe and don't forget to hug your chickens!
