That's what friends are for Kathy! To help us over those rough spots, to laugh with when it all gets so absurd and to share a tear with when your heart is breaking.

My prayers and healing thoughts are continuing for Brittany.

I so hope that she can come home very soon. I know when I hurt or feel poorly, the only place I want to be is HOME!

Kathy she is staying in my prayers until she is home safely. Any word yet on the baby? Has the baby been harmed in any way...is he doing okay?

Congratulations are in order for my little horde of motley mutt girls!! They laid an even dozen eggs today!! Yaaaaaay!!!
celebrate.gif
Of course, they had a little bit of help from my old girls to get that many. Sweet, gentle giant, Brewenna laid another of her monstrous eggs again today. That's 2 for the last three days! Not bad for an old girl pushing for 5 years old!

Not to be outdone by sister Brewenna, Abigail successfully managed to lay her usually fragile egg all the way without breaking it. Nor did anyone else break it just by trying to lay their egg next to it. I swear there are days that her shell is so thin you could read newsprint through it!

I've begged her to stop laying for her health, but she persists...every day...day in and day out...to at least TRY to produce that massive egg she's been known for all of her adult life. She's another of my girls that is pushing hard for 5 years. I'm not sure if the addition of wild bird feed to their diet is responsible for the improved quality of Abby's eggshell, or not, but it seems to coincide to within a few days of when I started giving it to them. Cyn? does that make any sense to you?

So, 13 little girls, with the help of two old biddies, managed to produce an even dozen beautiful eggs.

I'm still not sure of who isn't producing yet. I've already lost track!
lol.png
But I'm pretty sure I still have at least three girls who are late bloomers perhaps. I'm not worried....yet anyhow. Some girls just flower later than others ya know!

Amy, Funny you mention that, about the wild bird feed. I just recently started using that also. I am using it mixed 50-50 with scratch. I read the package, and though it is pricey, it is 19% protein. They enjoy it each night before roost time. It took awhile before they would eat the BOSS. I don't know why they kept avoiding them.

So, your old ladies are still laying .... that is just wonderful, and a testament to how well you have kept them. They surely are thanking you with their gift.

We have a broody Easter Egger that I allowed to sit on wooden eggs. Brock (DS) gave her a few eggs. She is a very determined girl, to say the least. All I have to do is walk in the door of the coop and she starts screaming at me. Problem here is ...... I don't know what day Brock gave her the eggs!

I need to move her out of the Layers Coop. I suppose I should just get the move done now. The other girls have not come near her, though she is on the favored nest of most. I wonder what kind of mama she will be.

Yes, all but FussyButt. I haven't seen an egg from her since about three weeks after Griffin went to his new home. Waaay back in about mid May....I think...She's in excellent health. Hasn't slowed down activity wise one bit. She just seems to be taking a vacation from laying. And after all of these years of faithfully producing her egg nearly every single day, winter, spring, summer and fall, I think she has more than earned some time off!
love.gif

She's becoming such a little princess lately. She has decided that she's too good for sleeping in the coop now. She much prefers her pillow [it actually belongs to the cat!] on top of the washing machine out here in the pump house!
roll.png
I don't mind really. She's good company in these wee small hours of the night when I can't sleep!
lol.png
Something tells me she's aiming for becoming the first house chicken in this family!

When, or IF she ever decides to resume laying, then all of my old girls will still be in production. But even if all four were to stop completely and never lay another egg, they'd still be precious to me. They are, after all, my original girls. And I'll cry like a baby, just like I did with Rita, when one by one they join their sisters on the other side.

Kathy, here's hoping that your little broody will be an excellent mama! Since she's an EE, she'll probably be fantastic about it. They're so friendly as it is. One can always hope that her fierceness at anyone who approaches is a good indication of how protective she'll be at raising the chicks. I'll keep my fingers crossed there for ya too!

How many more days do you think she has to go?

**edited because it's late and I'm getting groggy. Good night y'all!

How many have broody hens sitting on eggs?
I've got a BO and a friend who has two. I'm earmarked to give her some Del egg from my three WNY girls. We want to get some chicks as they're at learst two and I want to make sure I get some chicks. So we're going hatching crazy even though fall is fast approaching. Have to make sure we get some new hens.

Dels are like Lindt truffles You can never have to many.

Have a nice day folks.

Loooooooooots of broody hens here. They are everywhere. Make it stop, make it stop. I think I only have 3 on eggs left right at the moment. But I have 2 mommas sharing a baby, 1 momma with 7 babies, and a few moms who recently kicked the kids out of the nest. One of my new broodies is a screamer. That always cracks me up. Had a pending sale for a silver laced cochin pair and my 2 good ol barred cochins......and now one is broody as can be. Sigh. I guess I can still sell her....I'm trying to sell the broodiest ones in my flock...no more babies! I'll still have tons of cochins, so I'm sure they'll go broody here and there. But somebody please buy my leghorn/giant hens who are more broody than NOT. Save meeeeeeeee...........

Well, Nella, you need some of my Delawares. They don't seem to be prone to broodiness. At least not yet. Only had one go in over a year. Talk to me in spring and I set you up with some eggs.

Serrin: as a matter of fact it is. She's the nicest person and her DH is laid back enough to not have run me off the property.

How did you know? Doesn't really matter, I guess your just lucky to know her. Like me.
