Brandon, so sorry you had to go through this... first birds are always special! I can't be talkin though, I traded them a few weeks after I got them.

I can barely stand to get rid of even one bird I raised from the egg. The only time I really think of selling/rehoming any of my birds is if they are causing trouble in some way. My oldest ladies will be here till they go belly up-they're 5 yrs old now. My flock is aging and I really do need a few younger layers coming along, but I can't afford to feed many more than I already have. Used to have about 55 birds and that was way too many. Now, I have 31 birds plus the 5 chicks with Nugget.

I'm almost rethinking my March hatch. What I think I may do is ask the breeders I'm getting eggs from to send only a half dozen each, so I won't have a completely full turner (holds 42) or even better, only a 3/4 full turner. Definitely want my Barred and Blue Rocks, as well as the Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas, and the porcelain D'anvers as something completely different just for fun-the question is how many of each. Decisions, decisions!

That is a tough one, Cyn. Those little porcelains are cuter than anything- I like the birds better, but those that I saw at nationals were so dang cute and proud of themselves that I couldn't help but like them! They sure have a lot of personality.

If I decide not to do a hatch, I'm sure somehow, I'd lose more of my older girls and wish I'd gone ahead with my plans. The bantams won't take up much room or eat much feed so they won't be any problem. I already have my Delaware pullet, Tasha, who will stay---she thinks Tom is her daddy.

To some extent, it gets easier as you sell more birds. On the other hand, there are certain birds I will never part with. My first chicken will stay here forever along with 6 of her buddies that were some of my very first birds. I won't sell my half blind leghornX.

Of the rest there are a large group I don't want to sell.....for various reasons....although I could if the right person came along. And there are a few (or more) that I would gladly sell if someone wanted to pay their "value" LOL.
