O. M. G. That isn't even a Barred Rock rooster-it's a black sexlink. Those are the WORST Delawares I've ever seen. Makes ours look like ROYALTY. I can't believe anyone had the nerve to show birds in that horrible condition!

I caught Isaac in an awkward position, but here is a pic of him to take away the horrible visions in our heads from those "show birds". He molted out all the lighter colored tail feathers and is a bit "stumpy-tailed" at the moment.

I might have understood the terrible condition if this was day 10 but this is day TWO! You can see the bald butt on the one bird.Tails in tatters. Dirty looking yellow whites. I don't understand why the black aussies looked brown. Or is there a brown aussie. It was hard to get good pics as they don't wan to hold still.

When I got my Dels from WNY they were dirty and stinky. I drove all the way home for three hours with the windows open. Within and hour of putting them into a pen with clean fresh wood shavings you could tell they were really white birds. My point being how can these birds at the fair be so dirty looking?

Not sure who won what as I don't think the judgeing was done. Our fair is huge by some standards. Over a hundred thousand on some days. It was very crowded today as the day was cool. They had AeroSmith at the Grandstand the first day. We get horses and cows from Pa as well as NY. I buy soap at the Historical building every year. Last year I spend $40 just on soap. I like her Patchouli. They have demonstrations on how to do lots of crafts. Basket weaving, soap making, weaving and wool spinning. I like the sheep. Not to mention the food.

I'd really like to set up a table for the ALBC some time. Or maybe BYC that would be good. I just have to find out who to talk too.

I expect to go again and will try to get more pics.

Perfect example of why NOT to show my birds! Those birds are filthy and probably harbor diseases!

ETA: Tim, Were there any GOOD looking chickens there at all? How can a STATE show allow such obvious filth in their show? Isn't that just a crime, I mean really ..... just awful !

Yuck. And that is all I have to say about that nasty fair. Tim, I should THINK you were disgusted. Yuck.

Amy, Lizzie limped, then held her foot up, then spent all her time laying down - it was a sprain. I isolated her, babied her to death with daily scrambled egg and vitamin. She recovered, but it took a couple of months. Any other symptoms besides limping?

It's rather embarrassing but this is what the poultry show at the NYS Fair has become. There are undoubtedly a few good birds there & I do mean a few but the majority aren't much better than those pictured.
The sad thing is the NYS Fair poultry show was once one of the premier shows in the country. It's held in what in my opinion is the best poultry building in the country. There was a time when this was a 7,000 bird show with the best breeders in the country competing.
The current state of affairs mirrors what has happened to agriculture in NY.

Kathy,

Thank you sweetie! I'll check out both of those threads just as soon as I get done putting the boys to bed. I really appreciate the effort of finding them for me. I know it's not always easy to find things around here, considering how big this place really is! So, thank you again for the time I'm sure you invested in finding that information for me.

I was just in an absolute panic when I looked at her foot today. Couldn't even think straight!

Tim! Those poor birds! OMGosh! If those are what is being shown in NYS, maybe I should ship Brutus, Little Red and CB out to you to put in the show! SHEEESH! My mutts look a thousand times better than those boys! They are in terrible shape for this being only the second day. Either they were in real bad shape before they even got there, or the people in charge of set up don't have the first clue on how to handle chickens! Certainly not in a way that will minimize damage to their plumage! That's just pitiful!

And ya know what's the most disturbing thing about all of that? The fact that people who have never had chickens will come in, see that, and think that's the way chickens should look. Nothing like setting a bad example!

Thanks for sharing Tim. At least now I know that my little goobers really are some rather nice looking little kids, even if all they are is mutts!

OK, gotta go put the boys to bed. It's getting dark earlier and earlier every night, and colder too! Won't be long now........forecasted for an overnight low of 38 tonight or tomorrow night, I can't remember which. Can snowflakes be all that far off?

How's everyone's girls laying? I could not believe it today ..... everytime I checked I had more eggs.

I have 45 girls in the Layers Coop (don't know how many are laying), 12 Delaware girls (most are laying), and 2 Ameraucanas laying. Today I collected 50 eggs! I am thinking that ALL of my reds (Buckeyes, RIRs, rosecomb RIRs) must be laying now. The only hold outs I think are my 5 month old B/B/S Orpingtons. I got 9 Delaware eggs.
