Yard full o' rocks :

Nick....trust me....my 'bator can hold more eggs than your yard can hold chickens. I think it will easily hold 180 at a time!!! Right now I am only setting 6-10 a week, so I have PLENTY of room. You just let me know

You have the 3 rows on the Sportsman? 48 eggs in each blue holder, 2 per row (96). 96 x 3 rows = 288

My blue egg holders are 5x6 = 30 per tray.....Maybe I have the wrong sized trays????

At any rate, I've never filled it up, so I have "Plenty of space". But will have to look into the tray size thing

Yep, maybe that's right. Did you read everyone's posts about it a few days ago? Well I am only expanding my flock a little. My main goal is to get eggs, but the reasons that I'm picking the breeds that I picked is for their egg color. Did you know that you can sell a dozen blue eggs for $8 here? But yes, I will certainly consider Scott's offer. But I just think that it would be really great to see some chicks hatch before my eyes. I haven't had that experience, ya know.

I really wouldn't count on getting $8. for a dozen eggs for too long. Maybe on occasion, but people wise up and realize they are just eggs. Honestly.

I just think you are moving forward too quickly. You need to concentrate on getting coop space before you go any further. Just my opinion. You are looking at alot of expenses. Do you realize how much it is gonna cost to feed your larger flock? As well as all the equipment needed for them? It is expensive for adults, and I, for one, would not allow my child to get into such an expensive venture.

I'm planning that stuff. I don't see it as going too quickly, really. It's been about a year since I started again, and I've been saving for a long time. But really, I would like some colored eggs, and my customers love the green ones and have actually requested more.

I am actually selling one of the coops, I think. It's an old tractor. I was going to use it as a hospital, but since I won't be doing the bantam coop anymore the bantam coop will be the hospital. That I am certain I will NEED! I'm just ready for a coop that I can walk into, and some more eggs of different colors.

So the plan is...

-The current coop- empty, and used as a hospital.
-Small shed- my current girls, the dels, and some ameraucanas and marans. about a dozen total.
-incubator- maybe I'll sell it when I'm done. who knows. I just want to hatch my own chicks.

It really isn't that much. PLUS, I would get the run free! I have sooo much welded wire and stakes leftover from the Summer, plus two huge feeders and waterers!

If you want colored eggs, you can order Easter Eggers along with sex links. EEs lay gorgeous eggs .... all shades of greens and blues. You really gotta look at your goal ..... selling eating eggs.

Just my opinion and suggestion ..... I think you need to forget about hatching until you have all the above done.

Okay Kathy, thanks! I will get the shed, sell the tractor and my other things for sale (2 ipods, a CD player and a large dog crate), and buy the bator before the hatches. But, selling eggs is my MAIN goal. I do want some cool breeds for my yard too, of course! SO in that case, nooooo Sexlinks for me.

You're great! It's nice to have so many great people with so much experience around.

You said you have 40 egg customers? You can have how many chickens in the town you live in? Was it 35? Even if every single hen was laying that is not even 1 egg a day per customer. You want alot of eggs ....... sex links are the answer. Other breeds are sporadic, and they quit laying if they go broody. Think about a broody ..... 21 days on the nest, and another 6 weeks or so raising babies. That means NO eggs from that girl. Take a look at this thread. Mac has to have dependable layers. That is his business. He uses sex links.
