That's what you get for carousing around with humans, Nick!

You should never leave the calming sanctuary that only chickens can provide!

Sorry that you're feeling sick sweetie. Hope you rebound quickly.

Sorry, I forgot to answer them! I was busy dying last night LOL.

The eggs might be rocking a bit underneath her if they are due soon...and if you've ever moved a broody's eggs, you've seen her grumpily shift around to get them back where she wants them. I bet she feels them moving a little underneath......

If these eggs did not hatch, I would probably go ahead and give her another (large) batch of eggs. I usually give my girls a lot of eggs, that way even if I have duds, they still have a good chance of getting at least 1 or 2 chicks out of the bunch. I've had broodies sit for over 21 days. She'll either sit long enough to raise another batch to hatching, or she'll quit! Either way would work for me

I would see what happens on these.....if nothing within a few days after the due date, give her new eggs. A good batch of them. 10 eggs would be a nice sized batch. Plenty to have some infertile or quitters and still end up with chicks.

[eta: also, on her squealing as she wiggles.....she may just as well be warning off the other birds. Yes, they are not there but don't forget chicken pea brain at work here
wink.png
She knows the chicks are ready to hatch and is wiggling around to situate the eggs as they move and warning the other hens off without having to move off the eggs. I wouldn't be concerned about it.

You are one nice bean!

Yes she is Nick! And we're darn lucky to have her here with us! Thanks Nella! I appreciate the information very much. I don't know who's more jittery. GeeGee or ME!

If my recollection is even in the ballpark, near as I can figure, the two eggs should be hatching out sometime tomorrow or the next day.

If not by Wednesday night, then I will candle to see what's happening in them and go from there. I do so hope these hatch and she won't have to wait any longer. That's just gotta be the most boring job in the whole world!

Back from town. Good news! The co-op is finally getting an actual pullet grower/developer crumble!

That is something we just can't find around here and now, we have it! It is 19% protein, a new product from Tucker Milling whose layer feeds we use.

Janelle, sorry about your little incident! Ouch!

I'm going to postpone my dental appt on Thursday, maybe till next month. Supposed to be nasty weather and I don't want to make the hour and a half drive, especially that route through the Ocoee River corridor, in snow and ice.

Three of the four Delawares are in the brooder and the last egg has a good pip in it.

Go Dellies! I wish I could come get more! Cyn, what model hovabators do you have?

Okay y'all, DM agreed to Ameraucanas. We are looking for BBS and lav chicks or hatching eggs. I am on team hatching eggs. How about it?

Looking into Hovabator Genesis 1588. So if we keep 2 blues, 2 lavs and a splash, and maybe some Wheaten Marans, I think that I'll be satisfied for the flock expansion.

But I have a feeling that I'll want to hatch again. And so will my mom. And my neighbor.

I have the circulated air Hova with the rounded corners and two separate viewing windows, plus an earlier squarish model Hova that DH found at a yard sale and added a fan. I like the newer one better since it is higher and the chicks aren't as close to the fan when they're bopping around in there, but they both do well. I have only one turner, though, so if they both run together, I'd have to hand turn the ones in the square Hovabator.

This one is the newer model I like best (still has a wafer thermostat rather than the automatic one). The styrofoam is becoming very gouged up with all the use it's had.

This is the one he found at a yard sale--it had only been used one time and was a still air till he added the fan.

I use Tucker Milling products too. I have been using their Layer Pellets (16%) (my bunch wastes too much if I buy crumbles) and their Super Layer (22%)...I buy a bag of each every time and mix it to obtain a 19% mix that I feed ALL THE TIME.

I wonder if the grower/developer comes in a pellet?? I'll have to ask. For comparison purposes, was it much more than their 16% layer? I think I pay $9.75 for the layer and $10.75 for the Super layer

Nick....since I am just up the interstate from you, I have a Sportsman 1502....holds LOTS of eggs. I'd gladly hatch for ya if you want to save the $$ to spend on your coop instead of buying an incubator. Just a thought

I am hatching every week right now, usually due on Wednesdays

Off to clean pens/coops....have a great afternoon y'all

Hey Scott, How is the brooder you built working?

Nella, Hope you are feeling well today, after that nasty pill episode.

Cyn, Ya know ..... you should keep hatching out those Delawares. Sure are lots of people wanting them. I have 6 girls with Oliver (well, 5 now, as I pulled one out to isolation), and I am getting 5 eggs a day. I am hatching at least a couple dozen of them a week, and still not keeping up with all the orders. I try to hatch on Sundays or Mondays, and ship on Tues or Wed. Last batch of chicks did not get shipped due to the weather. I won't chance it when it is that cold.
