Nella, that is one handsome boy. I will get pics of Hera with Spike and his girls so you can size compare. That poor little black roo...how is he doing by the way?

Tim - I am not sure what it is but the comb looks swollen maybe a sting or injury of some sort? The legs...not sure. if it were scalely mites the scales would appear damaged and so forth. Maybe put some bag balm on it and watch it for a couple of days. I have seen this occur several times with one or another bird and it just disappeared. So I am clueless.

Kathy - this chick is so small I would be petrified to try to stick it for penicillin. That requires a good size gauge needle and the bird is so small, not to mention the shear lack of muscle to stick into. *cringe* So far, the chick seems to be healing up well...it is active, eating and drinking normally and not stressed in the least. Except when Casca sticks his big face in there to look at them. Then they all scream and run amuck. LOL The other 3 (2 lav mottled and 1 lav) are not picking at it or bothering the chick whatsoever. So, once little one gets healed up, the 4 of them go back to Sarah. They are being sold/rehomed. They sure are cute little things.

Chksontherun - little one is not mine, I am just doing the medical care for Sarah. Poor Sarah is working her tail off right now and is not at home enough to do it. Hopefully, Cheyenne does not get too attached to this little one

Tim, nothing except dirt is wrong with the rooster's legs, it appears to me. The red is normal, the dirt is the most basic thing to remove from a bird you're showing. The comb points were either eaten off by his women or he has frostbite at some point. He was in no shape to show, standard aside.

The little black mottled rooster is fine now..........still a big ol jerk. I actually gave him another chance to live in the big yard after I sold my blue barred rock rooster.....but he kept chasing my poor half blind hen and jumping on her blindside which annoyed me, so back into his personal pen he went. If he didn't have such fantastic type and such a hilariously funny personality, his butt would go far far away. As far as my foot could possibly punt him, LOL.

I tried to get better pix of the pretty buff columbian guy but he is in the rooster pen and they were all doing the crazy man dance first thing in the morning.

I will have to hunt him down and corral him to get better pix. I pulled out 3 roosters from that pen who were sold yesterday and now all the boys left in there are afraid I am going to grab them next. Crazy boys.....

That was interesting. Cynthia, if the Roo gets frostbite, does the comb ever return to normal? Or do the black parts fall off? I know a few of mine had some black this past winter but can't see any long lasting permanent damage. However I may just not know what to look for.

Nella I love the DRY ground it's been so wet here all year.
Kathy sorry for your troubles, it's the price we pay I guess. No way to put $$$ amounts on it is there?
Cetawin I love pics and yours are very nice. Don't have any blue chickens yet but hope they turn out as nice.
As Cyn, guessed they were pics of birds at the fair. Different birds. I was really only looking for a way to show them so I posed the questions. The red in the legs looked like blood but may not be. The poor rooster (they were both roos), didn't seem to be suffering from his comb problem which may only be asthetic.

take care folks and have a good day, lots to do.

ta, ta for now
Rancher

Afternoon folks....I "check out" for a few days and it looks like all heck broke loose

Rancher - BEAUTIFUL baby!!! "Almost" makes me want another one, but I think waiting on grandchildren will be better. Darcy is a truly beautiful baby....you must be very proud, and you should be.

Cyn - I am so sorry that you have lost yet another girl.

Weather here is slowly improving....not nearly so humid although temps are back into the 90s this week.

I have 3 broody girls AGAIN. Sugar (one of my Dels) is sitting on Del and or Del x spalsh rock eggs. Mammy (my BAD black rock hen) is trying to sit but after her first hatching and subsequent killing of her chicks we are doing everything we can to break her. Then, Big Mama, the blue rock hen has just finished molting and she is trying to sit again. I DONT WANT ANY CHICKS RIGHT NOW....and they just don't seem to get it.

I had a great telephone interview this morning to be the Regional Sales Manager for a company based here in the Atlanta area. I have just gotten an email about a face-to-face interview with their VP of Sales tomorrow afternoon....God is answering prayers.....keep the prayers coming!

I hope that everyone is well and I'll talk to you soon

I am sorry too Cynthia, I missed that one. I am trying to prepare myself for my birds that need to go when it is time. What age on average do they die or does it vary breed to breed?
