I have mixed feelings about broodies.
I love to watch moms and chicks...but my broody raised
are never as people friendly as bator hatched.

I'm also at a point in my breeding programs that I am
identifying and separating eggs during incubation,
and toe punching at hatch.

Last year I gave all my broodies eggs,
this year I have already broken five...

BUT, since my bators will shortly be full,
I just gave my broody Buff Orp Ellie 11 Delaware eggs.
She fussed and paced all day after I moved her to her own pen,
but by dinner time she was sitting on the nest I set up for her.

She was a good mama last year

I have one rabbit hutch type coop. It is 8 ft long and about 2 1/2 ft wide. I like using that for broodies with their chicks, so they can get outside. I am hoping to have 2 more built reallllllllllllllllllllllllllllly soon. I like the NellaBrooders for brooding chicks with light or for broodies to set to hatch.

My BLRW was great at setting and the first couple weeks with her chicks. THEN, she was DONE! She just left them! So now I have them in the brooder with other chicks. Can't always trust the silly girls.

I agree, broody raised chicks are not usually as friendly as hand raised chicks. Anyway, I like to play with them and mama broodies won't let me.

Ellie hatched one chick last year, little BW Ameraucana Mia.

They stayed together until Mia was old enough to move into the
breeder pen (16 weeks). They were a hoot together!
Everything Mama would do Mia would imitate...

Ellie would flap her wings, baby would flap...Mama would scratch,
Mia would scratch... BFF's
