Sorry, I am getting type and shape confused. I meant shape. I don't think hat he has that bowl-shaped body.

Type and shape are the same thing. Jay would be a cull. He would not be a good breeder.

The bird I showed has great type but not good coloring.

Ah, okay. Thanks.

Honestly, none of Georgie's latest babies has good anything except bright yellow legs. Wish I had known earlier that it was her throwing those. To be fair, though, 13 weeks is too soon to really know if a rooster will fill out well. Some are late bloomers. If you just have a backyard flock of layers and are not breeding Delawares, doesn't much matter.

I just want to start with a trio of pullets, Nick. Kind of a breaking in period for Denny. You know, get him used to the idea of being climbed upon by little pullets, sought out at every turn....them becoming a bunch of "Daddy's Girls"

You get the idea I'm sure. And then, when he's hopelessly in love with Del's I'll spring the idea of a separate coop just for breeding Del's on him!!

He won't know what hit him!

Yay! Gooooo team Amy! I am all for these Delawares! Thank you again Cyn, because I loooooooooooooove them! And, you said that we can "always dream" about getting 3/5 chicks to be girls... They were! Even if one is a jerkface.

I agree 13 weeks is a bit young. I usually wait longer. However, the boy I pictured is also 13 weeks old and I can already see his type is great. Coloring poor, type is great. I have culled too early before, so I do not recommend culling tooooooo soon! Yup, there are some late bloomers, for sure!

Apparently I don't know how to count. i had 13 chicks alive, 1 dead and 3 eggs left. I was off by one!

1 of the remaining 3 eggs was pipped......HOWEVER the 3 hens are done sitting on eggs, they have BABIES to take care of. So I kept finding the eggs uncovered and cold. Happened off and on all day....each time they were probably cold/uncovered for 1-2 hours at least.

Finally tonight, I took the 3 eggs away and stuck them under my broody barred cochin who JUST started sitting a couple days ago. Went and mowed the lawn for an hour or so and then came back to a nicely hatched and wet chick! So i took it and the egg shells out, and stuck the baby under the 3 mottled girls to dry off and be part of their happy family.

Not sure if it is blue or black. Too wet to tell just yet. Hoping for blue of course! i still have 3 or 4 blacks from my late 2010 hatches that I haven't gotten sold.

Tally on chicks not including the new wet blue or black one?

1 reddish buff
5 yellow
3 black
2 blue
2 striped

Neither of the other 2 eggs are even pipped. i will give them until tomorrow night to pip and then toss them. Soooooo....15 of 17 eggs hatched. Not bad for a trio of first time broodies.

I have pix but I am waiting for them to upload.
