Well, you knew what I meant.

Yes, I saw that the first time. My goodness, Laura, but you are going to have a well stocked freezer this year, aren't you!! Or do you think you'll try to find homes for all of those little guys?

I so wish I had room for just one more boy so that these little girls in the brooder could have a proper mate. *sigh* Not gonna happen though, and I know it. There just isn't room for even one more boy! Not even a bantam boy! Gooby makes five after all. And I'm struggling as best I can to keep his precious little neck off of the chopping block as it is. Denny keeps eyeballing the little guy's thigh and breast size and licking his chops.

With all this "freezer camp" talk, I have a question.

Can you "process" a chicken without all those crazy tools (lung removers, etc, etc)

I have a BUNCH of cockerels from my first Col Rock hatch (9 of 12....uugghh) and was considering trying it. I dont care if I have to split them in 2 instead of them being whole. Anyone got any suggestions? With the cost of feed these days, somebody needs to be paying theirr way around here, LOL

THANKS all!!

Never used anything but a knife to process a chicken. No extra tools required. You will need to check the meat chicken pages. How are you doing Scott: I finally have chicks again. They are soo Pretty. I love them already but know that part of them will be meat someday too. Sad come to think on it. They are so precious now. Gloria Jean

All I've ever used in cleaning upland game birds [pheasant, quail, chukar, Hungarian Partridge, etc. ] is a sharp fillet knife and a small spoon [to scrap the lungs out

] If you don't mind skinless meat, cleaning becomes even easier, but I like the skins, fried or baked, so I go through the effort to pluck.

We don't ever pluck ours. . . .We skin them instead. The skin and feathers pulls off the chicken for the most part with a little trimming from the knife.
It does require some hand strength , but we like to cook ours skin less. Hence, this method works best for us.

Well all this talk about letting chickens be chickens....has finally cost me. I lost my beautiful Buff Cochin, Hera, several hours ago to a dog. Judging from the attack spot and the drag marks to where Sarah and I found the body...it was the large beagle or Rottie from my neighbors place. She was caught because poor girl was so big and slowest of all my birds, she never stood a chance of getting away but it looks like she tried because of the two groups of feathers. I have warned him to keep them home and have had all the guys chasing them away...now the order is to shoot on sight.

My poor girl was snatched right from the yard by the front porch and I did not protect her so that I have to live with but...one sighting and they are dead dogs. Cheyenne was crushed because that was her baby...she lived in Cheyenne's room for several months when we thought she was still a bantam and then she went out into the coop. I feel like such a louse because I was here, in the house, and heard nothing so I did not help her.

RIP sweet Hera

LH, PLEASE! Do not beat yourself up about this! You could no more protect Hera from those dogs than I could protect my beloved Gimpy. As much as we'd each like to be able to control the fidiots that think it's just fine and dandy to let their killer dogs roam free and unfettered, we have to face the fact that we have no control over them either.

You had spoken to that twit next door on several occasions about the trespassing nature of his mutts. You gave him fair warning of what the consequences would be. Take the gloves off sweetie and aim to kill!

If he's too dang pig stupid to understand your words, that I know you kept in as simple of terms as possible, so that his simpleton's mind could comprehend, then he's too stupid to be having any animals at all. I've shouted to the heavens, my sentiments about dogs on the loose and the people who [supposedly] own them, often enough. I think you know where I stand. You have my complete and utter support and understanding of how you feel dear friend! 100%!!!

I am so very very sorry that you lost Hera. Please give Cheyenne my heart felt condolences as well.

I hope that you can both take some measure of comfort in knowing that Hera lived a full and wonderful life, every day of her life! She was a true chicken in the best sense of the word. You gave her the freedom to be a chicken, LH. There is no shame in that!

She just turned a year old. I am just a ninny now everytime someone makes a sound I am running out with the rifle.
