I want to set eggs but it will still be too cold to put chicks out in April and I have no room indoors right now!

I had a good day. 72 degrees and a nice 2 hr ride with 3 other ladies. Our horses came back wet. I'm so sorry about your snow and freezing cold-been there, done that.

I had to drag out water for the horses when it was freezing. So I would thaw it out in the sun once, then after filling water for the horses, I would stand at the faucet and empty the water out as I coiled it up. Next time it was fine because it was empty.

Yesterday, since my silkie won't give up her empty nest, I put 5 Polish eggs under her. This will be the 2nd time in 5 years that I've hatched my own chicks.

Today is day 19 and I swear I'm hearing chirping. Which would not be unusual. Though I would much rather have a later and better hatch. 37 eggs this time. Much better than last time.

We shall see,

Nice weather here. Cleaned a coop, lots of poop. Used most of it for mulch around some trees. The rangers usually get to it and scratch it everywhere.

Glad you hear peeping! My eggs always hatch early. The incubator is in my bathroom and I can hear it from my bed when I hatch!

On day 20 there were 11 or so that hatched. One problem I'm having is with the Birchen Marans. I'd really like to have more of them since they lay nice sized eggs. 2.5 at least. The only thing is the poor hatches I'm having with them.

The last hatch out of 14 eggs I got four chicks and of them I helped out. All the other egg breeds in the incu hatched.

Now while this is only day 21 and not all the other eggs hatched the BM 's are on only 2 for 8 so far. Why would this breed have such a hard time. I checked the eggs that didn't hatch from the last time and they were developed but just didn't make it out. Could this be a genetic thing.

What causes it? When I got the parents as chicks all the roosters had a crooked toe. The four hens seem fine.

I'm not too up an up on Marans but I remember reading where some folk sand/sandpaper the shells of their Marans hatching eggs to make it easier for the chicks to be able to crack? too thick?IDK?

Check out Chookschick website/or PM her it might have been her write up, she has some interesting stuff there.
