Looks like my Nick, my avatar rooster, is on his way to that big coop in the sky. He's my original rooster and it's hard. He's got to be over 5 years old and can hardly walk. I've separated him cuz George the rooster I hatched from Speckledhens eggs keep beating him up. Nick still has quite a bit of fight in him though. I never did keep one of his sons and I'm regretting it. You just never expect these days to come.
Yep The old Roos sooner or later get beat up and replaced by the young wings. Come join us on KIMNIM Del thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/777172/delawares-from-kathyinmo

Serrin welcome back and yes been a little slow on BTC . Good weather and everyones doing the spring thing.

Went to barn the other night to get a tool. And all the Dels are roosting on the muck tub which has DE and dirt in it for dust bath.
Sorry but had flash off and night light not very bright. It looks like a Hen party. LOL

These are from Robin's and Julie's hatch from Mid March
Need more photos of the babies, Tom

Lordy! Lordy! What a mess today! Goobey managed to escape his enclosure and straight into CB's and his ladies yard. A horrible fight ensued and poor CB came out on the worse end of things. If it weren't for the fact that I know CB egged [no pun intended] Goobey on, I'd be furious with Goobey. I'm not happy with him, to say the least, but I know CB brought it on himself with his constant antagonism of Goobey. Still, my poor little CB man!

He's a MESS! I know it looks worse than it is....but when there's blood everywhere, one always fears the worst! I got him cleaned up as best as I can and Neo on the worst wounds on his comb and wattles......

I so hope we find the time to build the dream coop/green house this summer. I swear, these boys are bound and determined to KILL each other!

I am so sorry about the roosters beating each other up. I hate it when I come out and find blood all over the chicks.

How are you setting up your dream coop/green house?

I have coop and greenhouse setup, which is why I was wondering.

Well, what's on paper and what will ultimately be, are likely to be two entirely different things.

But, to answer your question, what I have planned is this:

The structure, as I have designed it thus far, will be 40 feet long by 24 feet wide. This will be divided in half down the long axis, with the green house on the south side and coop on the north. The coop portion will be constructed of cord wood and the green house side will be constructed of dimensional lumber, recycled glass thermal pane windows and polycarbonate panels. We have a rather large wood stove waiting in the wings to heat the entire affair as we intend to grow some vegetables through the winter. This will also keep the coop portion warm in winter so that I don't have to worry so much about frost bitten combs.

I intend to section off the coop side into five 8 foot by 12 foot pens with individual access doors to each and individual pop doors leading to outdoor covered scratch yards for year round use. Each outdoor section will have a gate leading to a two acre free range area that I hope to cover with bird netting to keep them safe from arboreal predators. The perimeter of the free range area will be contained within 8 foot tall chain link fencing, set into concrete to prevent dogs, coyotes, raccoons and whatever from gaining access to the flocks.

It's an ambitious project to say the least, but sooner or later, I'll have it. We just have so many other projects to wrap up here before we can even think of breaking ground on this one. So, for now, it's still in the dreaming stage.

I'd love to see pictures of your set up Alaskan. I'm always looking for new inspiration and good ideas!

Wow! That sounds wonderful!

I set mine up with a standard, 8foot tall 8x8 coop. Then I built a greenhouse, those polycarbonate panels (I guess that is what they are, ripple almost see through plastic stuff) that is 8x16 with a 8x16 shed that connects the greenhouse to the shed.

I set it up so that the chickens could play in the greenhouse in the winter. My chickens have never liked going out in oodles of snow ( probably because I often have a fair bit of wind too) and so they get the greenhouse in the winter.

Anyway, I will see if I can get good enough pictures and then post them....

Oh, I also set it up so the chicken run is up against my vegetable garden, so they can be let in in early spring and again in the fall.

Sounds like good planning - good job

We also put ours in the garden in the winter. They move from place to place in the Gypsy wagon.
Gardens now planted so they are back for the summer In the Winter wheat / clover plot we let grow in the winter.
