Hey, all! Panda is laying again after a 3 month break to raise her babies! I was worried because I kept seeing her sitting on a nest, then she'd get off and that's the way Olivia's malfunction began, but today, there was a perfect round green Panda egg in the nest!

Her blue Orp boy will be going to a new home tomorrow with itsmyobsession.

I got a green egg yesterday too.........haven't had one in weeks........I need to lock a few of my "olive eggers" up so I can see if they are indeed laying brown eggs, or just not laying at all yet. I only have one I know for sure lays a nice dark green.

Speaking of locking things up........I have 4 brooders in my garage. 2 that are 4x6 (1 short, 1 tall), 2 that are 2x8 (medium height). I use them to separate injured birds or to isolate a bird I need to do something with later (so I don't have to chase them down in the yard). I had 4 hens in 1 and a 1 rooster in another.....they all got tossed out yesterday. I have 2 very young failure to thrive babies in 1 of the 4x6 brooders....and 1 rooster in 1 other 2x8. The others are empty! 2 empty brooders! I am going to start locking up a batch of girls for a few days at a time to see if they are laying.

Has anyone had any luck "rearranging" a rooster pen? My boys are so "set in stone" that I can't add anyone new. But what if I took the two or three "top" boys out and a few sale boys out.....and added a few new ones? Think that would switch things up enough to make it work? I really want to get a couple of the extra boys in the yard I had added because of the hawk issue...OUT of the big yard. i have a bald girl again, so they definitely need some rooster pen only time. Chicken sale next weekend, so maybe i will wait a week and sell all the boys I can.....then completely rearrange the rooster pen.

think I could fit 4 bantam roosters into an 8x8 pen? I wonder if that would be pushing it.

Yay for Panda! That is good news Cyn.

And I would like to announce that Alexander is safely here, eyeballing his new women and ignoring me completely. It was really funny to watch him. After a very quiet ride home, I got him into his Q pen, and opened the box. He scuffled a little, and then let me lift him out. I put him down, he took about one second to get his bearings, crowed his little heart out, and headed straight toward the side of the pen where he can see his new harem, who were lined up, checking him out. Marianne was nudging Alice and commenting on his cute butt. Lizzie decided that maybe she DOESN'T want to live in a layers pen, and Cora and Eleanor were absolutely going mad trying to figure out a way to get out and over by the new man on campus. Janie was screaming for a hen saddle and saying "lemme at him, girls, I'm first". Georgine and Jeanette, were, per usual, just standing and staring. I think this will all work out quite nicely. He can also see Harriet and the little ones. And I guess like calls to like, because the only one there he has focused on is Emma, the little Del.

Kathy, did you tell him he was getting his own bunch of women?

The only one giving me the hairy eyeball over this is Ultrasuede. I think he is afraid he will lose his fat bootie ladies, whom he has learned to cherish. Everyone will get scrambled eggs and brown rice for a treat later this afternoon.

Nella, I know nothing about what to do with massive amounts of roosters except process them!

Beth you would not dare do that Ultrasuede, you go out there and tell him so immediately. Let him know his big bottomed girls are always his...soothe him properly. And bear treats when you do it.

Ultrasuede has been soothed, treated, and promised to pieces. He is a really peaceful, calm soul overall, and I am hoping he will not stress over this. In fact, I told him to hang on, pleasant surprises are in store for him, as Gloria Jean is giving me Cloud, a splash Orp hen from her Suede son, so he will have another beauty to woo. I am going to get her hopefully next week sometime.

Cyn, BTW, Silk and Satin are both laying quite nice sized eggs for pullets, and very regularly. They have settled in to this egg business without a hitch, and lay in the same place. They are great buddies, and will often watch each other lay - or perhaps they stand guard over each other, as Katia has a way of sneaking up on them and pecking them, even on the nest. And weight wise, the Suede line is doing well. Ultrasuede weighed in at 9.5, Satin at 8 and Silkie at 7.5. Ultrasuede is a little over 10 months old, and the two girls were born in early March, so I am quite pleased with their development.
Just thought you might want to know how well Suede's kids are doing.

And the quilt shop in Franklin that was in the magazine I saw is called "A Stitch in Time".

Okie Dokie as long as you are properly soothing the Son of Suede, we have no problems. hahahaha I hope to be able to crawl to the mailbox in a day or so and walk to it sometime next week....grrrrrrr
