I put up my new "scarehawks". LOLOL. The chickens are probablygoing to be terrified of them tomorrow.

There is a 4th one right back near where the last 'kill' was.

Speaking of kills.....one of my dogs found one of the chickens that had been attacked.

Not at all, I did promise no more birds until we got everything situated, pens built and etc....and then Ebony, Baize, Lancelot, Hera, 5 Silkies, Emmett & Esma, Spike, Blossom and Rose and the three I hatched Hedwig, D'Artagnan, & Maya. And a Horse coming.

I think he had the right to tell me "no"

Yup, prior agreements trump current situations.
I can't use the bator until next year. So now I'll be pacing, waiting for 1/1/11....

Nella, the really gross thing is your dogs probably rolled on that carcass, too.

Maybe.....but I actually saw them having fun carrying it around and playing with it.

Just the young dog......grooosssss.....

Does not surprise me at ALL. Dogs are icky sometimes.
LOVE the scarehawks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was passing out treats and putting the birds away this afternoon when I heard Jezebel yalling "Meof! Meof! Meof!" as she ran down the hill. I always look when a cat yells, "Meof!" because it usually means Callie's about to spit a live, slobbery cricket on me. Jezebel doesn't usually yell about such things, so I watched as she ran up to me with something brown in her mouth. She went pthew and spat a bird at my feet. Thankfully it wasn't one of my birds, but a wild bird. Jezzie was very proud. She's declawed and has never caught a bird before. She sat next to her trophy and glowed with pleasure as she winked at me.
It was a sap sucker of some kind, not a hummer, and was in very poor condition. I suspect it was ill or aged and that's why she was able to get it. I hauled it away from the chicken pen (grateful everyone was put away and couldn't investigate) and "put it somewhere safe" while Jezzie was watching. When she got bored and wandered away I threw it in the trash (thank heavens tomorrow is trash day).

Jezzie never messes with my birds, but I had a bit of a scare wondering if a millie chick had gotten out. Jezzie brings home a LOT of moles and the rare baby bunny. Never a bird. Hope she hasn't learned a new trick!

I want another kitty but DW says they would HAVE to stay outside! I had an inside cat when we married and she doesn't want to have hair, kitty litter, etc again

I really want an inside pet.....oh well, not a fight worth having at this point. Anyone have outside kittys and do they do ok? I'd probably have to build them a heated "cat house" for sleeping in during the winter. I couldn't stand for them to be cold

BTW - morning everyone!!!

I have an indoor only cat...my dogs are mostly indoors only (other than carcass playtime apparently)...my 2 bunnies are indoors in hutches......I NEED a barn cat for rodent control...but I struggle with having an outside animal. Lord knows, it would probably get eaten by the hawk now, sigh. Cats are "happy" outside, but sure don't seem to last that long. I have too many predators here......coyotes yipipng at night, hawks and loose dogs during the day.

So i've had chickens for over a year and a half and have my first bumblefoot case. It's one of my original white leghorn hens. Wild as the day is long. It is pretty bad looking although I haven't gotten my hands on her yet to look close. But her whole foot is hugely swollen and she is gimpy. I am thinking that will be a weekend project. I've read a few threads on it over the course of my byc life....anyone have any personal experience? I figure I need to cut open, get gunk out, wrap for a few days and then turn her loose.......?

Also, where is that silkie's HEAD? LOL. They crack me up. my two girls are such poor hatchery quality that their faces are easily distinguishable. No beards either. Neat birds though.

Brrr, guys! It was 50 degrees this morning and projected lows for the next week are low 40's for Mineral Bluff, so at my elevation, which is about 300 ft higher than in town, it may be in the 30's! The transition to cold weather takes a bit of adjustment, but I like cool better than hot any day!
