Sdwd

It's official. Emily is broody! She's back in a nest after a morning potty break, clucking in her throat and screeching to beat the band. Omigosh, it's almost November, for crying out loud! The Firetower is vacant, though hasn't had a good cleaning yet. I dare not clean it and add dampness and fumes if she's going in there. Bad Emmy! I'll put the three Ellie eggs and two June eggs underneath her, I guess, that is, if she doesn't snap out of it when we move her out of the coop. She can have heat and plenty of space in the Firetower, plus has the attached pen when they can go out. The only reason I'm considering this is all the girls I've lost recently. I don't want to be left with all elderly hens next year. Emily herself is in my youngest group, about 9 or 10 months old now.

Serrin,
I have no answers for you. Sorry, I can not be of any help at all on this subject. I am sorry your poor little girl is suffering.

Cyn,
Congratulations on your broody girl! It is always exciting to have a broody. Really, it is!

Amy, Our house in Iowa is paid off. We lived there 27 years. Currently it is rented to our son. We just pay taxes and insurance. So, it really is not costing us alot for upkeep now. However, this house we bought in Missouri has a mortgage. We could pay it off by selling the Iowa house, and then I would not have to work. Otherwise, it will be 2 1/2 more years before I qualify for retirement (from DH's Railroad retirement plan). When he retires at age 60, they also give retirement pay to the spouse.

Kathy- SELL IT!!!!! Retire!!! Raise chickens!!!!!

Drink, eat, be merry!!! AAAAAGH!!! I want to be at home in bed!!!!

Well, Emily is situated in the Firetower with 4 Del eggs (all Ellie's) and 1 June egg. When June lays in a bit, and she is on the nest now, we'll add that one and am considering adding one from my almost 4-yr-old Lt. Brahma, Miranda. Would look like a Del with feathered legs and a weird comb, I guess, LOL.

I dunno, but they're nuts!

I moved Maxie down into the broody pen with Nelda. Neither of them is going to live and they shouldn't bother each other, but they need to have the same ACV water and heat lamp and no need for them to be in different areas if they can be together.

Nelda will not drink or eat on her own. We syringed the egg yolk/yogurt/Avia Charge mixture into her mouth yesterday and today, more than once, but if she won't begin on her own, there is no hope for her. She has to want to live.

Maxie's color goes from purple back to red back to purple. She is guzzling so much water, it keeps coming back up when she bends her head down and I guess it's part of her sour crop problem she had, but I'm not sure of anything except that neither will make it, in spite of the fact that Maxie on occasion has plenty of energy.

Cyn, Im so sorry you're going thru this with all your girls. And I read of people who have 6 and 7 and 8 year old hens, that Im sure arent near the dedicated caretaker that you are. Just dont seem fair, does it?

Exactly the way I feel, Kathy. Well, Emily seems to have settled on the eggs now. She now has 5 Dels (all Ellie's) and 2 of June's. Hopefully, she'll stay on them all night and be a good mama. With 5 Dels, maybe I'll at least get one or two girls. And I did start the thread you requested.

My chickens must not watch the weather channel either. LH's lady chicken is broody......my very young Leghorn/Giant Cross is broody.....

Now let me interrupt and say....she is very young. How young?

Here is a picture of her on March 5th of 2010. She is the big yellow one. She is 32-33 weeks old now, apparently. She has been broody for a few weeks but i didn't let her keep eggs right away. I think she is about 1 week to 1.5 weeks from hatching.

PLUS, my little white silkie hen went broody......again.....so I have 3 broodies right now. 3!

I ran out of darn brooders again! LOL. I think it might be time to move the shredded rooster out into the big yard.
