Ya know, I was reading an old poultry book ... like 1920 or something, and they used to do that back in the old days. They highly recommended doing this for growth potential. I was asking around about it and found that alot of breeders, today, do this also. Otherwise they say the girls are often slighted at the feed dishes. Interesting, huh...

Yes, you do need to get some updated pictures of those pretty little girls!

I find the boy chicks are much more aggressive. The "boy brooder" is generally rowdy and wild......and the "girl brooder" is much nicer. I did that last winter with my large batch of home grown jersey giant crosses. I had 20 something chicks total. Split into a group of 8 girls and 13 or 14 boys. The girl brooder was always fantastic and nice. The boys were wild and crazy. It saved the girls from all the "boy drama", and made it easy to fatten the boys up on their own for "dinnertime". I gave them away as a large group at I think about 10 weeks old. Yum? LOL

Oy vey. Hate those "crowing hens".

The family just left here....they took 5 hens. Left me with a trio of girls left, 2 blacks and 1 barred. They were super nice.....now on to the next person on my list! LOL

The partridge hen is GONE. Just gone. No feathers, no evidence, no nothing. Gone. I don't think she went broody. Maybe a hawk got her? She was very tiny. Who knows. My other tiny hen was the lavender cochin who got sold today. At least she can't get eaten! Slowly whittling down my "loose" bantams....hate losing them, they just aren't safe in the yard.

Hello, remember me? Sheesh! WINTER!!!!

I do have a crowing hen, that is what makes that even funnier. Harriet crows. Seriously.

I, too, am going to try splitting the sexes this spring. AND I am never again going to name roosters till I know I am keeping them for breeding. Boo is huge and edible looking, and I just can't do it. He and Ivan have become the biggest pets - Emma has laid her first egg, and I need to put her in with the Dels, but I can't break this little family up. Boo tries to mate Harriet, and she slips out from under him and then turns around and chases him all over the pen, screaming. Ivan still has a kazoo crow, and they are the best chicken TV a person could have.

Who are you? I don't recall seeing your posts lately. LOL. Did you get snowed in?

I am apparently a glutton for punishment. I went to the local shelter on my way home. They had the cutest black cat. Looks just like my evil cat Norman...only female and smaller. She tilts her head and looks around like she can't see very well.

she had been at this "kill shelter" for a month. Since before thanksgiving.......I couldn't very well leave her there for Christmas, could I? Her name at the shelter was NAPKIN. How funny is that?!?! My cat is Norman. Her name is Napkin. Similar? And they only accept cash.....and an adoption with all tests/shots/spay/microchip was $126. And I had $76 in my purse and $50 at home.

It was meant to be.

She is staying there til Wednesday and then will get spayed and I will bring her home Wednesday night

Oh btw, guess who is down to 63 birds? meeeeeeeeee

Looks like I have a buyer for a trio. That will make 60. And another person interested in 5-7 birds. That will bring me to 55 or LESS. I am excited! My end goal has been 50! And I sitll have some large fowl birds for sale too. Looks like I should be able to hit my 50 mark once I am done selling the bantams and a few large fowl. Excellent!
