Kathy, yeah, just googled the acre thing a few nights ago... Lol.

It's not too bad. I have the garage right behind the house, in the guest house, and then there's a little walk, but I have feed and a hose back there, plus a few trash cans of bedding. The thing is I have my corid/sulmet, organic ACV and vitamin/electrolyte stuff in the house. And, I have to use the ACV whenever I fill up the water. I'm such a clean freak, I disinfect the feeders and waterers every time I change them out. But it is fun working outside, being harassed by Dels. But, I need to make a small storage area for more waterers by the coop, especially now, as it's getting so hot... I am filling them up several times a day... Even with ice, it melts immediately and the water can't stay cool.

Thanks Cyn. When I read that you're "hardly ever likely to come across a sick chicken with tight bio-security" I jumped on the opportunity.

No issues since then... Have had bad ones in the past, though.

Yep! Been there done that. In fact this year we decided not to raise any cornish due to the feed prices going up. We had some friends show us how to process them two summers ago. And yes I did get a lot more boys with this batch. That's ok though, it makes it easier to decide which ones to keep. Any that don't get rehomed will be sent to freezer camp. Oh and there are a lot of Amish around here that will do the processing for us if we don't want to.

Kathy, you hired a home slaughter service last year, didn't you? I'm just curious. What was the processing fee per head, and did they package them for the freezer, or did you still have to cut and wrap your own meat the way you wanted it? I ask this because a friend/neighbor way down the road had told us of a guy in the next town over that will do chickens, slaughtered, cleaned and wrapped for the freezer, for $2 a head. I'm just wondering: is that a good price?

I would dearly love to hatch out about 3 or 4 dozen eggs from our flock, but I always worry about what to do with the extra boys. If I had a reliable slaughter service, I might not have such a concern about it.
