I too had my first casualty from the heat. I have been doing alot of extra things and water bins and frozen this and that. There are a fair amount of shade trees in the pasture so they al lgo there. When i got home they all saw me and of course came running - but my oldest buff cochin hen did not -she just laid there. I have to assume heat - as there were no other apparent signs of illness. i sort of kick myself as she was one of the ones who seemed to be struggling more with the heat but i really dont know what else i could of done - dang mother nature - her and i are on the outs - we are currently NOT speaking

Knox I am sorry about your girl. I am watching Craigslist like a stalker...if I find a central or commercial ac unit reasonable...I am going to get it and have my fil install it. This is ridiculous. I am tired of losing birds to the heat and fighting predators too.

She has a wicked sense of getting even with those who would sneer in her direction!

LH, wanna borrow my Colt Woodsman .22? It's a mean little handgun, semi auto, and just the thing for plinking smaller vermin such as your fox. I know you to be a crack shot, so why bother with anything bigger? And why damage a nice pelt with a heavy and cumbersome shotgun? In the heat y'all have down there, it seems to me that traveling light would be just the ticket!

Laura, that's a great picture of you, Brandon and LH. I want that T-shirt you're wearing, by the way! Where ever did you get that?!?

Kathy, how is Olive doing in all of this heat? Is she still broody? What about Floozy? How is she doing? I just can't imagine any girl going broody in that kind of weather! Who the heck would need to even sit on the eggs? Seems that the bigger challenge would be in keeping them from cooking right inside of their shells!

We have family from Wisconsin coming in on Sunday for a few days. I'm so far behind schedule in all of my cleaning and preparations it isn't even funny!

. So, break time is over with. Time to put my nose back to the grindstone. Hope y'all can find good and safe ways for you and your animals to stay cool!

LH....foxes at mid-day scare me a bit. We often see them when deer hunting, especially right before dark. I don't recall ever seeing one if it wasn't early, early morning or very late afternoon/evening.

I would be very suspicious of it being rabid and would take precautions accordingly!!!

Out there at your place (and the surrounding area) there should be NO LACK OF FOOD for a fox. Please be very, very careful with your family and your animals

Knox, Sorry for your loss. This heat is a killer, for sure. I have lost 2 thus far. Yesterday I had a few going down and I brought them inside the attached garage to cool off. They slept in there, too. They all went back outside this morning, but I imagine I will be bringing them in this afternoon.

LadyHawk, Take good care of Lancelot! That boy is irreplaceable!

This morning I let out another pen of chicks (May hatches). Their pen is 100% shade and they never seem to be suffering badly from this heat. This pen has Wheaten Ameraucanas, 100% Imported English Orps, Projects, Delawares, and Barred Rocks. I sat and watched. They are so interesting. The Orps stayed in the pen. The Ameraucanas went outside the pen, but nearby. All the others hightailed it out into the timber.

I can't believe my girls are laying in heat like this, but they are. I am still getting at least 3 dozen eggs a day. I am getting LOTS of pullet eggs. Yesterday I got my first one this color. It is either from one of my Easter Eggers or from Miss Olive and Mr. Lavender Ameraucana offspring.

That's a very respectable size for her first time, Kathy. Especially considering the heat y'all are having to deal with. Just amazing! And all of your eggs look positively lovely together. Don't you just love a rainbow carton of eggs?!?
