I did not know hawks came in groups! OMG, they were everywhere! Scary. They all went for the same pen. A pen of young birds, not the layers coop (which is not covered). It was this pen (picture from a couple days ago). I believe they got 3 BR, 1 NH, and 2 Dels.

RATS!!!!!!!!!!!!! And in a group! Poor little things!!! I am so sorry, Kathy.
That is bizarre-in a group - I have never heard of that - two together, yes, a group, no - can you move those chickies to a safe place while you are gone? I will make a very bad attempt at cheering you up by saying you can bring me all the pullets. haha. NOT. What a rotten thing to have happen.

Dang sneaky jerk hawks!!! You will have trouble with them forever now. AGH!!!

It was a sight to behold, when I got out there. I, personally, saw 4 of the hawks. 1 was absolutely huge. The astonishing thing I immediately noticed was the dead silence and no chickens outside, EXCEPT roosters. My layers coop has 5 males (I forgot one, as I thought I only had 4 in there). The 5 roosters, George (Project F1), Frenchy (BCMarans), Beau (BLRW), a Wheaten Ameraucana, and a Silver Laced Wyandotte were all standing around the perimeter of the layers coop, as if stationing themselves for an attack. They were quietly pacing the fence line, working together. It was dead quiet out there. My breeder pens looked empty except for the Barred Rock males being out. The others were all inside. Oh, wait..... 2 Icelandic boys were out, too.

I so wish I could have videoed such a sight. Sickening carnage, yet impressive (my flock). I have my netting out, and it will be put in place on the remaining pens tomorrow. No one will be out freeranging. The pens with no netting will stay inside until it is up, except the layers coop. I am not covering the layers coop pen.

Good roosters! It always amazed me when Hawkeye, may he rest in peace, would literally push the girls under the leylands, then he'd station himself out in the open like a big barred statue and wait. A good rooster is just awesome and when they work together, it's truly something.
