Mentioned it elsewhere but may as well here as well. Had a hawk attack yesterday that killed one of my older girls. Stew #3. As you may remember, I lost Stew #2 to that freak maggot thing recently. It's a bad time to be a bird named Stew here lately. Only one left, Stew #1, my first chicken ever.
The chickens are all locked up indefinitely now. Thank goodness I downsized enough to where I can do so without overcrowding. I did take off Thursday from work and plan to finally build doors for the front of the garage/barn area where the rabbits are. It is 12x24 and even with a bunch of rabbit cages in there, it has the full floor space. The cages are all up high enough for chickens to walk underneath. I believe I will move the "main flock" which numbers a whopping TEN to spend winter in there. That will leave the 8x8 coop and 8x8 covered pen for the New Hamp quad, and only 1 extra New Hamp rooster to figure out what to do with. I do have another New Hamp rooster but will be bringing him to sell this weekend.
The mottled cochins are all already spending winter in the garage in their 4 brooder shed/units. This will at least put it off til spring the whole "making hawk secure areas".
