O. M. Gosh, Nugget started clucking today!! She was apparently reminded by Dottie in the broody pen next to her coop that she hasn't gone broody in about 8 months and it's time again. Sheesh, I don't need another broody, even if it is my special Nuggs, the best broody on the planet.

Good news is that June finally produced an egg today, after going on the nest multiple times over the course of two weeks and worrying the snot out of me. Nora and Riley are not laying and still go on the nests so they are still in jeopardy. Caroline gave me an egg today, though, so I put one from June and one from Caroline aside and will add one from Ellie, probably, to give to Nugget, if she decides to get serious (and I'm sure she will, knowing my girl).

Mina looks too sweet to be a tormentor but I know the d'anvers well enough to know that is very very possible. hahahahaha

Laura ... there is always room for another roo Lord knows I got enough of them. LOL

Well the Delaware boy is with his new mama....I took him (now named Dexter) and a coch'anver boy down to Ms. Clemens today. OMG she thinks Dexter is the most beautiful baby she has ever seen. She began spoiling him and huggin and kissing on him immediately. They were snuggled in her bathrobe and being rocked and are spending a couple of days in the house with her so they "can get to know each other". LOL When I left they were in a playpen in the house with a big ole basket of hay to sleep in. hahahahahaha Pics later.

Cyn, you take such great pictures

Gideon looks like a sweetie.
Don't you wish it were possible to keep more boys. OMG! I sound like Amy!!!

Careful there Laura. This malady is contagious, you know!

Cyn, I love that pic of Mina the Terrible. Looks like a true southern redneck chicken to me with that bit of grass sticking out of the corner of her mouth.....kind of like she's saying..."Yeew ain't from around here, are yew!?!"

Kathy, do you give Tyson a treat every time he chases off the geese? Some kind of reward? If not, start doing so. He'll soon figure it all out and make the connection. Chasing geese = TREATS!!!!

Well, I've got a bit of bad news to report. A second hen of my flock has been attacked by a hawk today. Charlotte, daughter of Chief and either Rosie or Ivy, was brutally assaulted mid morning, out behind the little cabin. How she made it from there, all the way back to the coop with the horrendous injury she sustained is utterly amazing to me. If we had suffered a comparable injury, I'm not so sure any of us would have made it.

That rotten hawk, of which I'm pretty sure it was the Cooper this time, as they are bigger and much more powerful than their smaller Sharp Shinned cousins, ripped my poor sweet Charlotte from just above her hock, all the way up to the top of her pelvic bone. At its deepest point, I'd venture to say that the gash runs at least a quarter of an inch deep.

Denny and I immediately cleaned the wound, stitched her up and applied lots of tri-biotic ointment, both to the inside and outside of the injury. Stitching alone took the better part of an hour and a half, and brave dear Charlotte never complained once. Never even so much as flinched. Though she was trembling throughout the procedure. I think she may have had a mild case of shock. Amazing, considering how traumatic the whole event must have been for her.

She's resting as comfortably as I can make her, in the Nella Brooder in the pump house. She remains alert and actually chipper, despite not being able to put her full weight on her right leg. She even laid her egg in there this afternoon! What a little trooper!

My only concern at this point is how that deep gash in her thigh is going to heal. She may never have full use and mobility of that leg again, and that would make her terribly vulnerable to future attacks by any predator.

We shall just have to keep our fingers crossed and say small prayers for a miracle. And why not? One has already been granted today: She made it through and is in good spirits. So long as Charlotte is willing to fight for life, how can I do any less for her?

He gets a treat alright................ ME! I am his treat, and he just better be satisfied with that. I give him a pat on the head and tell him he is a good dog. Good 'nuff......

Now, Tyler does give him treats. BUT, who does Tyson mind the best...................... ME ! ! ! !

Best wishes for a complete recovery for your girl, Amy!

Amy, I am so so sorry about your girl. Give her time and loves...she will do the rest if it is possible. You so know this drill already so I will not give advice on the wound...just don't forget a good shot of penicillin if you have some.

Cyn, I think Amy nailed Mina's expression perfectly. hahahahaha

Well the as I said, the little Ike and Ellie cockerel has gone to his new home with a coch'anver buddy. Ms. Clemens is this very sweet older lady that lives for her grand daughter who is handicapped, her chickens and her ducks, doggies and cats. She adores her birds so I thought the little boy would be loved there and I chatted with her about it before I went to GA to get the babies. She was tickled pick to get babies as the broody she had sitting on some of my eggs was killed by a fox. Silly broody kept rolling the eggs downhill into the barn and setting up her own nest so she finally let her stay down there...well fox found her and some of her free ranging birds. :(

So, I took the boys to her yesterday and it was instant love and instant name Dexter!

And she thought the coch'anver boy was just as adorable albeit not as gorgeous as Dexter. She loves her big ole roosters for sure. :) Her Barred Rock boy came over and met the boys while she was holding them...he seemed to approve. He is such a laid back ole guy.

The boys did not seem to upset by these turn of events...heck they barely noticed me leaving or sitting right beside them. The loyalty was lacking with these two once she got her hands on them. hahahahaha

This has been what has kept me busy this week....POWER TOOLS! Notice the Diva Do supervising, as usual. Everything that goes on in HER barn is supervised by her just in case we stupid humans try something funny. LOL This is an H Press I am cleaning up and restoring in order to use it to make Damascus. Hubby thinks I would be good at making Damascus steel and I think it is interesting stuff so I am gonna have a go at it but first restore the H Press to save some hammer time then clean up and repair the forge I will be using. Like I need to learn something else to get me into trouble. hahahahaha

Coolieoolies LH! I can hardly wait to see you putting that beast into action! Ain't power equipment FUN!?!? But please, do be very careful with that dang grinder. As one who has done battle with the evil contraptions and lost, please, heed my words. ALWAYS wear eye and face protection. I give you exhibit A to support this warning!

As bad as that may look, I got off easy. Google grinder accidents images sometime. Some have not been so lucky!

And always, ALWAYS, unplug the dang thing before you change disks! I just about jumped out of my skin when I saw Bill change heads without unplugging first! Tsk! Tsk! Bill!! You should know better mister!

LOL calm down.mother.... Bill stood on the Kill switch. I put on my goggles eventually. LOL

Sigh. Another unexpected chicken problem. My Buff Brahma, Caroline, laid her egg late today. I picked her up on a whim to snuggle her and found she's lost quite a bit of weight. I noticed a couple days ago that she was "snaking" her neck, like she was trying to swallow something too big so I did check her crop and found, though it was full, it seemed somewhat pliable. Today, though it wasn't full, it has something hard like a good size rock in there. Either it's a ball of something that fused together to form a stone-like object and it semi-blocking off her nutrition or it's actually something she should not have eaten at all. She is in Zane's cage with yogurt laced with oil and water with acidified copper sulfate for anything that is starting to sour in there, but no food.

Tom says he will absolutely NOT do a crop surgery on her. We've never had one end successfully for whatever reason so pray we can break up whatever this thing is in there and save Caroline. She isn't molting and is the picture of health, still laying several egg a week at 5 1/2 yrs old. Dottie has one of her eggs in her clutch and I have collected two more for Nugget, in case she starts to set in the next several days (so you see, Caroline has laid three eggs this week already). I hope we don't lose her, but I sure want a couple of her kids if I do.
