Kathy! You may be the one to ask. Was looking to get some absorbable sutures on Amazon, but they only have the larger kits (I have about $11 left on a gift card). They used to have just individual sutures with needle, but I can't find that anymore. I'll keep looking, though, as their offerings change. I was wondering what kind-is chromic okay? What size? 4-0, 3-0, or does it matter in this case? We had to use nylon invisible thread last time and I hate that. Quilting needles are NOT made for suturing, either!
That's cool, but those are all non-absorbable. When we do crop surgery, you want catgut and I see only the non-absorbable in the lower prices. In closing the outer skin, the other stuff is fine, but when we closed Angus's crop, we had to leave the stitches in there and they may cause issues if he survives. The outer ones can be snipped later, of course.
Well, I did find this on another search off that site!
Yes, thanks! I hate being caught without the right stuff. Tom hates to do crop surgery; never had one end well because they were so depleted by the time we realized it was serious, but it's either try it or let them starve.
Ah, geez, I have TWO more broodies! Aimee, one of the D'Anver hens, is broody for the second time this year and DUSTY, the psycho chick killer, is also broody. She hasn't been broody in literally a couple of years now. The first time, she tried to kill the chicks at 3 weeks of age. The second time, she waited until they were 5 weeks old. Thankfully, both times I was standing right there to save them and throw her back in with Suede, but no way I want her to do this again. You just never know when she's going to go nuts on them!
This makes 8 broodies this year. Nugget is going into Day 12 tomorrow with her remaining 3 eggs, though I'm only really sure about Caroline's, sort of sure about Ellie's and I think I'll be removing Panda's in a couple of days if I see no more development.
Tried to get a picture of Gideon's red feathers coming in on him today, but only got the shoulder one and you can barely see the red in the hackle in one pic:
Isaac was having breathing issues today and it wasn't even really hot. If he dies, I won't keep Gideon, either, most likely. The only reason I have Gideon is because I thought Ike would be more likely to accept him into the main flock, but Gideon pants himself, even as young as he is, when the heat is on. I may end up trying for an Ameraucana rooster or three in the main flock some day, but that's down the road.
Where is everybody???? Kathy, not even you? Just realized I was the last three posts.
Well, Gideon is crowing at 11 weeks old! BUT, the crow I heard that day was definitely NOT him! His is the typical first timer crow, not nearly enough polish or volume for the one I heard. Still a mystery.
It may be, though those can't be left inside, can they?
Angus is dying. Whatever was happening before the crop quit is the real cause of this. He is weak and color is very dark. Nothing we can do. I'm ready to sell Aubrey, too. Angus was the sweet one, Aubrey the typical D'Anver male personality. I am having a hard time remembering why I wanted them in the first place, to be honest. The hens are precious and adorable, but my older standard hens can live in that coop with them just fine. Maybe one of Shadow's sons would be sweeter. Aimee has one of her eggs under her right now. Gosh, I feel so defeated.
At least you tried. I know it does get discouraging when it's one thing after another but hang in there, it's bound to get better.
I have another broody too, this time a Jersey Giant. That makes 6 this year and yes, they all were from Kathy's stock
My broody BR, Speckles, hatched out 6 babies. Four olive eggers and two marans [from Wynette]
Kathy, have fun with the new camera!
I am fighting a migraine today and I have to go to a graduation tonight. My DIL and my sister are both getting their degrees from college. An hour drive to the auditorium, two hours sitting there and then and hour back.
