The problem I've found with vetwrap is that it tightens, especially if it gets wet. It's even worse on birds with big fat feet like Meg. We use it on occasion, but only over a cushy strip of bandage we've cut from some old soft stretchy shirt so it can't tighten down and cut off circulation.
I agree it's easier to treat when it comes to a head, but there again, can be a problem. It can go systemic and kill the bird, so it's a little scary sometimes, waiting for it to come up to the surface.
