Sebastopol geese - selecting breeding stock, color genetics, and color improvement

Pics
Establishing your own flock of Buff Sebastopols and improving their overall type and vigour is not so straightforward. The owner will need some grasp of the 'colour' genetics' involved in this breed in order to select the best Sebastopols to use for improvment in the type, feathering, vigour etc of the foundation flock.

The presence of the sex linked 'Dilution Gene' can lead to unexpected results and complicate the breeding programme further. For example a Dilute Grey can bear a striking resemblence to a Blue and ultimately the colour of the coloured Sebastopol may be incorrectly identifed. Breeders of Buffs would do well to establish a flock of foundation Buffs and also a flock of Whites or Saddlebacks to use for overall improvement in type, feathering, vigour etc.

Hope that helps

I didn't mean type doesn't matter or that you should breed any ugly a birds together because they are a certain color.
In order to get a new color you have to cross to another breed that has the color you are seeking but could be quite different type wise than the breed you are introducing color to.
Then you correct the type as needed. Thats all I meant.

Thanks for clarifying. That makes a lot more sense than how the other post came across.

I have a question about mine. The one closest to my friend is not very curly at all.
Of the curly ones, I have 2 curly breasted and 1 smooth.
What should I do with the straight one? Will she have curly babies, or should she not be bred?
They are just my pets.

Glenmar - its a little difficult to judge your smooth goose from the picture but I can only assume she's a smooth breasted with trailing fethers coming off the shoulders. As Celtic Oaks said she would breed 50/50 if paired to a curly male. In fact here in theUK the Smooth breasted are the most popular and recognised for showing.

Going with the thought that

curly x smooth = 50% curly and 50% smooth

smooth x smooth = 25% curly, 50% smooth, and 25% totally smooth.

I have one of the totally smooth birds....what would you do with it?

I am pairing my totally smooth goose with a full curly gander next season. I hope to get mostly smooth breast offspring (and not a lot of total smooth), but its really getting more of the color I want at this point.
