Sebastopol Geese Thread !!!!!!!!!! SHOW YOUR PICS !!!!!!!!!!

RG it is Nut and berry blend you will see it when you get there and into that section. It does Not have bird seed in it neither of them have those very small seeds in them. I tried that before and the geese told me to shove the tiny seeds. They did not like them at all. But boy did they eat the nuts out of there! Sorry I did not get on here sooner did not feel good today and layed down and slept after I got my birds done.

I've purchased injectible Baytril from First State Vet Supply without an Rx and was very happy with both the product and their customer service.

Baytril is Enrofloxacin and is in the same drug family as CIPROfloxacin. It is Ofloxacin for human use. It is a good antibiotic, but my issue with using Baytril as opposed to some of our good old stand by antibiotics, is that when you need those old standbys down the road, they are not going to be effective after first going in with the big guns. One of the reasons we have MRSA and VRSA problems in our human environment. That and the over prescribing of antibiotics. Always give probiotic when giving an antibiotic also. There can be some nasty side effects associated with Enrofloxacin also. Best advice is to just be careful. It is advisable to own a professional Veterinary formulary. They run about $80.00. Plumb's is recommended. I keep Baytril on hand myself, but rarely use it.

My friend...that makes two of us. I had to start on Cipro today to kick this junk out of my system. Staying home because I don't want to share it with unsuspecting folks. I am going to shut my incubators down, following you as soon as what is in there is done. I am fixing to order my professional books on avian medicine. Vet books are expensive, but a great investment. Nice to see that you are a good obstetrician yourself, RURU!

That was very informative. Thank you. What do you recommend to use for a first line of antibiotics? Something like duramycin?

I smashed them. They crush pretty easily.

Not sure on the antibiotics- I used some duramycin (milder than chicken dose) for a short time when my goose had her leg eaten off by coons. Not sure if it helped, but her stump didn't get infected.

I have no idea what I just did...now that is on there twice. I would go with a broad spectrum antibiotic that is known to go after gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Bactrim is a good choice. Let me do some home work, since I am inside on the mend anyway. Cipro isn't a bad choice, either. it has less nasty side effects than the Enro. I have the list of the Enro side effects and I was like...EWWWW! If you have to use it, you have to. And yes, the fish antibiotics are identical human and veterinary use antibiotics. I have a great many of them stocked up. Hey Daze...after we were talking about the broody girls, those nut and berry and the Patio, Porch and Deck seed and nut mixtures that RURU talked about are also excellent ideas I had not even thought about. You would have to crush the Bactrim...they are huge, as anyone knows who has ever taken it. Some times you can get them in the powder, but I find it easier to do the mg/kg conversion with the pills or capsules sometimes, and then other times the powders if your route is going to be through water delivery. I sometimes just sneak it in the food. Depends. Try outsmarting a donkey when you have to give them something...that's a trick! LOL!

The only time I had to give antibiotics was when Gloria our grey goose got hit in the leg by the pellets that bounced when Ron shot the raccoon who was killing our ducks and geese.
Her leg shattered from the pellets and had to have rods and pins put on her leg for about 4 weeks I think it was. He also put her on Baytril...
I had some amoxicillin tablets I gave to Sammie when Grant almost plucked him to death.

Question can you give any antibiotics to geese with bumble foot? Just curious to know? In case I have to deal with it. If so what kind?

You can, and I would actually recommend it. For something as serious as the shattered leg you mentioned, RURU, I would say the Baytril was a good choice because of the infection potential. I hardly ever have to use antibiotics, but the time you don't have them, you need them yesterday, if you know what I mean. Flagyl is another good antibiotic (Metronidazole). There are situations where going big gun first is the best course, such as that one.
