I am really excited, and hoping it is fertile! It is from my gray goose, and a friends white gander that carries the buff gene. I'm hoping for some nicely colored babies out of them! I loaned her my other gray goose to pair with her lavender splash boy. She just got her first egg from them this weekend as well. I can't wait to add some new colors to my flock!

I have a few eggs from my favorite white seb goose (who throws splashes) and I think fertilized by Celtic's gray gander! YAY! I haven't seen this gander mount her. How long can fertilization last from another pen? She has been with him for 3 to 3 1/2 weeks.

I have a cotton patch goose egg inn with the sebs it is on day 18 and has list 12.35 percent already which seems a bit too much. Wondering if i should stop misting when i cool?

I have a couple of questions and hope that I can ask them here :)

When misting Sebastopol eggs ........ How many times a day? Do you mist the whole egg or just spritz the top?

Now, this might seem a bit silly - but I know it matters with plants and fish ........

*** Can I use softened water? We have well water that is very hard, and we use a water softener. I have to be careful with some things and wasn't sure about misting eggs :)

Thanks!
Trudi

I used soft water last year with no problems. I just spritzed the part of the egg showing, as it sat on the towel cooling down. I didn't turn it over...just sprayed the top and sides. 1X/day too.
Good Luck!

I use spring water for misting and in the incubators. We get a warning in the mail every month that our city water has an unsafe level of carcinogenic detergents.

So- I could see that once again Lilli had left an egg in the yard. In the pouring rain. Well, once I picked it up I realized couldn't be mad at her.

That is next to a regular goose egg and a jumbo marans egg.

Hi,

I'm new at BYC.

I'm from Holland and Sebastopols are really rare here. I'm thinking about ordering some hatching eggs from the UK. There is only one thing I'm worrying about.

This weekend I went to have a look at 2 couples of Sebs that were for sale in Belgium. After a long drive I arrived at the sellers house. At first I didn't recognise the geese as Sebastopols. They had maybe 2 curly feathers hanging from their back and the rest of their feathers looked almost like wet wool on a sheep (this is the best way I think of explaining). The seller told me that in winter it's hard for them to take care of their feathers. I left without buying the geese because I never seen pictures were they looked this bad.

Now I'm wondering if these geese were poorly cared for or if this normal (they were outside in a muddy pen). Maybe someone could post some pictures of what I should expect them to be this time of year?

(Our geese are being locked up every night in a big stable. At daytime they are in a big meadow without mud and they are provided with a little kids pool or at least a few buckets of clean water, is it possible to keep them at least presentable this way?)
