Sebrights in winter

I live in Minnesota and have 2 Sebrights. I have an insulated coop that I believe is dry and draft-free. My other 8 hens are "cold hearty" breeds, so I am confidant they will handle our winter just fine. But I have read that SLS's are not cold hearty. So....what does this mean exactly? What kind of special considerations do I need to make for them. I have a heater in the coop that I only planned on using for the extremely cold times (well below zero). But perhaps I will need to use it more than i thought?

Sebrights are extremely cold hardy. Don't let the size fool you. They don't require a heater in the coop.

I have Sebrights, but I live in North Carolina, where it rarely gets below 15 degrees. The man I bough these little girls from left them outside year-round, with a roof over their head, but no sides on their coop. He said they did just fine, but I baby my chickens.

I believe many people caution against heat bulbs, but I use them. I have pine shavings on the floor of their henhouse, and a red 250 watt bulb suspended from the ceiling (at a safe height, to where they aren't going to touch it). I just put the bulb in one of those utility lamps from Home Depot, and leave that metal shield thing around it to keep dust from getting on the bulb. I also tie the clamp on the utility light to a secure place, just in case it were to fall from where it is clamped. That way, it won't go too far.

I have used them for about 5 years and never had a problem. You might want to use multiple bulbs, depending on the size of your coop.

I hope that helped!

I have read several times that they are not a "cold hearty" breed. It's good to know this might not be so.

Even tho my Guys -n- Gals live in a VERY well insulated coop heated with 2 red heat lamps, my seabrights always follow the flock outdoors...tho they come in sooner than the rest...

And OMG!! What the heck laid that GIANORMOUS egg????

Barb; Sebrights are hardy enough not to worry unless we get really cold here in our area. Then be concerned about all of them. Our Mrs. Chicken is a GS and the boss of the rest of the chickens. we just hatched a new Sebright from her. Don't know if it's a he or a she yet. Mr. Chicken lives in the country where he can crow his head off. Mrs. Chicken went to a sleep over and gave us one fertile egg!

ETA: her egg was not as big as Little Chicken Racing Teams!
