**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

One of my quail went missing last night. I kept hearing someone in the brooder making lots of noise and ended finding her behind the brooder and very upset that it took me so long.

Another poults was out today, chirping the "help-help " call and we rescued it -- back into the brooder.

If they tortured animals, there really should have been a police report! That sort of thing should be in someone's permanent records. Torturing animals for "fun" seems to be a first step in violence in later years, right? I mean slaughter for a purpose is one thing, but torture for their own amusement is not at all the same. How terrible...I'm so sorry you had to go through all that and also that your grandaughter had to go through it as well.
They didn't and I tried. When I lived out in the Bay Area the cops would have been all over them, but out here the deputy gave me some ideas for helping to keep them out of my yard and that was pretty much it.
Barred hen x black rooster = barred boys ( white spot) and black girls ( no white spot)

I have a pen of barred hens with a blue amercauna rooster. black sexlink chicks. white spot or no white spot.

Wolf-- sorry for the terrible loss!! You will want to write up a formal police report on the theft. ANd I"m sure you will be hunting down the names of those kids and find out about their family. SHEEEESSH. That kind of behavior is scary. I would think the police would notify the owner of the birds in this case as a crime was committeed. WEird.
It's been over a year. Three years since the goat disappeared. These were kids who were in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Can you imagine what they'll do as they get older?? And they just didn't think my birds were important enough to do anything other than going over and talking to them. I have no idea where they live now, but they're still close. My grand daughter ran in the other dad yelling "gramma those boys that killed your chickens are down the street!!"
I absolutely detest any torture of animals. Your poor birds. That just makes me sick !!!!!!!!! We have the Nebraska Humane Society here in Omaha, they are great, people do alot of cock fighting here. I am a retired wild bunny rehabber and I was a badger when it came to kids torturing the wild rabbits. Sicko's. ......... I feel for you and understand......the police should be on top of all torturing of any animal...!
From what I hear, their mom is something else. My neighbor told me what he caught them at and said he just couldn't give me details. He said I didn't want to know. Then when I was going to go to the house, he pleaded with me not to go deal with the mother. We have pyros in this area. They burn down everything. He said this woman is so crazy, she'd wait till we were home and asleep to send someone over here. This is a very fit guy in his 20's and not a wussie guy at all, but he said he's just waiting to them to move. Then they do and it's somewhere close by. Those kids broke the windows out of one of his classic cars 3 times and he said the first time he went and talked to the mom and that night ever window was broken out of his cars, but he couldn't prove anything.

Quote: Sounds like the entire neighborhood needs to put up security cameras. Get the little monsters on tape. Then the cops HAVE to deal with it. I caught someone on audio twice making threats toward me a couple years ago. Put a stop to it REAL fast once I could prove what I was dealing with. I was in an apartment complex at the time & it was the manager's adult daughters doing it. Not only did they get evicted, but mom got fired because I had reported the harassment to her & she ignored it because it was her kids doing it.

I don't get these kids. I remember being little and kids like around the block being evil. I met a few that way when my kids were growing up. Now it's the grandkids finding out that these kind of people exist. It's sad really.

Quote: We had a few ornery ones in the little village I grew up in but not really any down right bad kids. All of the parents in town knew each other & we got ratted out if we even left the yard & weren't supposed to. That's what happens when your entire town has less than 30 houses...LOL I don't think there was a single parent in town who was afraid to put a kid across their knee & whoop a butt either. It got done right out in the yard, street, wherever the kid got caught at, & no one even thought about calling children's services for it. I have done the same with my kids & nutso neighbors call children's services. When they call or come knocking on my door I tell them exactly what the little monster did & how many times my hand swatted that rear & they tell me I have every right to do so. I've even had a cop stand there & tell 1 of my kids if they didn't straighten up they would put him over their knee if I didn't do it 1st...LOL People have told me how polite my kids are in public. They are only brave when we are behind closed doors & think they can run from me before I swat them. They still don't usually get too far. Dear old Mom is still faster than they seem to think she is.

My turkeys are huge! They are already flying out of the brooder. Had to put the top on it last night. They've already graduated from the heat lamp (they're still indoors), thankfully.

One more group of birds to wean off the heatlamp, they're about a week behind the turkeys/tutors.
Yup I was having escapes with the poults too. I had to move them outside yesterday into the big brooder in the barn. I will keep the heat lamps on for a while longer since they are already out. I would keep them in the house longer but the brooder I have was already getting too small for them. I am a little worried that it might be a bit too soon but I just couldn't leave them in that brooder all cramped up. Besides, the little buggers were using their waterer as their launching pad and spilling the water. Now they have a ton of room and a waterer that is too big for them to topple over right now.

Yes, if mine were outside they'd have a heat lamp, too. But indoors at 65-70? No way.

I'm wondering if I can combine them with the psychotic game birds I hatched a week after the poults/chicks that are still upstairs in the main house. I have a 4x4 brooder in the basement, so it would be plenty big enough. Normally I wouldn't combine two and one week old chicks - the size difference is crazy - but these game birds are the quickest, most alert things I've ever seen. I don't think they're going to get run over by the poults. I'd have to turn the heat lamp back on, though.

Which means the top won't go on the brooder...

My banty and her duckling are wicked cute. The duckling did get pecked bloody on Thursday so it has a nice coat of Blue Kote on its neck, but they're still cute to watch. There's a rubber bowl of water in the yard that the duckling loves to play in. I swear the banty hen is going to have a seizure when she sees her "chick" doing that. She scolds and scolds but you can't take nature out of a duckling. Every year my banty hen raises ducklings for me (I have a couple really good broodies, she's one of them) and I wonder if she is confused when the duckling hatches ("What the... I don't recall doing that... AGAIN this year?") but she's a good momma.

All my babies are growing up!

Hopefully everyone in the midwest is safe after the bad storms this weekend.

Quote: I know exactly what you mean about games being psychotic.

We've been raising them for the past 10 years I think. They also make up most of the chicks I have at the moment. I have all my chicks from the past 3 to 4 weeks together and I still have game chicks hatching. They get a day in a box by themselves and the next day they go in with everyone else since I know they handle it.
