**~~>>Second Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatchathon<<~~**all poultry welcome!

I love writing silly poems... Let's see...

My first flock

I dreamed and I longed to have chickens,
but never was the right time.
Hubby claimed they would smell like the dickens,
but fresh eggs would be sublime.

Then through Google I found BYC,
and I thought and searched and read.
There was so much to learn and see,
turns out there was no reason to fret.

Now we have our own little flock,
and they are quite a breeze to keep.
Let's just hope my black Jersey cock,
will allow the neighbors to sleep.

Made that one up on the spot ^^ Fun!
Says it all! LOL

Limerick
There once was a hen named Kella
She liked to talk to the fella
that brought her some feed
and water indeed
Her favorite was corn that was yella.

Kella is an Icelandic hen from Notafarm. I think that Mary may have spoiled her. She talks to me all the time. I think she is saying "that's not how Mary did it! "
Me? Spoil Kella? No way.........

This sounds fun and interesting. Don't know 'nutting about raising turkeys. Hopefully, the fever won't hit me. Just going to observe the ride and see what it's all about. Doubt we could ever do this due to land limitations and coop housing. It's all we can do to keep the chickens safe from coons and hawks.

Have fun everyone!

I suspect this thread will be a Poetry Pandemic! It's exactly as it should be.

Wen and banded the first 57 of my birds with my new bands last night. It's going to take forever to get it all done, but I have to get it down to one system to manage my pedigrees...so it must be done! I got the adjustable colored/stamped aluminum bands from Ketchum Mfg. and I love them. Unfortunately I was an idiot and only ordered 100. What the heck was I thinking??

No reason not to have some! Don't let the name fool you into thinking they can't take the weather. There are some in TX already and in LA, AZ, CA and other ridiculously hot places!

I know.. I just have to make room in the incubators.. I am already overrun with eggs again

.. and still haven't shut down any of the incubators yet

plus I have my "need to make room" list going.. (some of those birds are going to quit laying soon too.. eep!)

Just ordered 300 bands this week, going to try wing bands this year.

Just got my eggs from thebirdguy, so I'm in! Woop.

A haiku for the day...

The springtime beckons--
gathering of eggs begins,
kinship and humor.

oh be prepared for some of the chicks to be drama queens when you band them

some breeds were fine.. Crele Dorkings and Red Dorkings didn't care.. neither did my Euskal Oiloa chicks..

the Bresse were cry babies.. they fussed whene i banded them.. then went back to eating

the Silver Grey Dorkings were nuts..one grabbed hold of the band on his wing.. then tried to run away from it (even though he was the one pulling on it) screaming the entire time .. but wouldn't let it go

the biggest drama queens were the Buff Orpingtons and Australorps.. once i banded the first of that bunch the others acted like they were stuck in a cheap japanese scifi movie.. running around screaming in pure terror.. you would have swore giant chicken godzilla was attacking the city.. it was mayhem and panic everywhere

well I was going to try to set some eggs from Trader Joes as tutors/an experiment. Turns out the TJs here doesn't carry the fertile eggs, so that's out. On the plus side, I found a local source for blue laced red wyandottes and I'll be picking up some eggs from her sometime this weekend or early next week, whenever she has collected the dozen I'd like. I'm pretty excited about those as BLRWs were one of the breeds I really really wanted but when I ordered chicks from Meyer they were only able to send me one, and she's a splash. Nothing wrong with that, she's still pretty, but now I hope I'll be able to have several girls and a BLR roo too.

So this is a tentative plan but I'll be setting:
6 golden palms
6 blue slate and/or black spanish (mixed pen, so we'll see what I get out of it)
12 BLRWs
however many "mystery breed" eggs the neighbor chickens decide to lay in my barn or woodshed between now and then

Here I started out saying that I'd rather not hatch tutors because I didn't really want any more chickens, and now I'll likely set/hatch more of them than turkeys. DH will be thrilled. lol
